Will PS3 3D upgrade be backwards compatible?
Mixed messages coming from Sony over which games will work

It's hard to see how existing PS3 games can be made 3D-capable

We already know that Sony is planning to introduce 3D games to the PlayStation 3 next year, but what's the truth about backwards compatibility?

While the company has said that a future PS3 update will enable all older games to work in the extra dimension, it seems that's not entirely the official line.

    Nothing's decided

According to Joystiq, Sony is "conducting a technological investigation" on how this might be achieved, but it has no concrete plans just yet.

In other words, it doesn't actually know yet whether the 3D revolution will come to just new PS3 games like Avatar or if the old classics like MotorStorm will benefit too.

    Smart money on new games

Given the facts that PS3 software is notoriously complex and that introducing 3D isn't as simple as just slapping a pair of glasses on every viewer, we're sorry to say that it's not looking good for the oldies.

What do ye think this will do for gaming?

Apparently 3D Tvs will be readily available in 2010,the next big thing?

    Will you spend the dosh?

Will it be ridiculously overpriced for years? Probably

I for one look forward to Wipeout HD 3D, :p

You will only see very simple games on PSN that will support this feature. The problem is that if the game is to be 3D it needs to run at a stable 120 frames per second and you also need a 120Hz tv to get the effect.

I can't see 3D making a lasting appearance. I'm certain it's set to just be a fad again.

It was a fad last time as everything looked terrible, with the red/blue filters.

Not have this issue anymore. I can imagine that some games will be outstanding in 3D. Is the PS3 even capable of delivering this in big games?

I'd rather that game developers focused on gameplay than incorporating new features like this just for the sake of it!!

Okay, Heavenly sword made great use of 6-axis control and incorporated it well into the gameplay but I'm not sure many other games have. I reckon 3D games would be the same.

While new digital 3D is good, it's still not perfect by any means. There are alot of issues like the colours looking dull, things being out of focus for some people, needing to have glasses, that are holding it back. It's still in a very real danger of becoming a fad. Personally I think I don't think 3D (cinema and the like) is going to last in it's current incarnation. The tech still isn't quite there.

In the cinema I can't fit the 3D glasses over my own glasses properly, so everythings out of focus and certain things strobe. Wearing two pairs of glasses hurts your ears. Short sighted people are going to need perscription ones to be honest.. and that's a bit awkward.

Add in the fact that you'll need a new and expensive television and I don't see 3D being important for another 15 years. You can get Philips amBX for 50 euro nowadays, it's compatable with relatively big games like Crysis and Supreme Commander but I've never heard of anybody that bothered buying them.

The other thing you need for this to work are shutter glasses which are cumbersome. They really need to get rid of the glasses for this to ever be accepted as norm.

Were more likely to see this come into gaming, seen as how there are more and more 3D movies in production.

Personally i would love to play Silent Hill 3D

There were some tech demos showing off Wipeout HD in 3D and the general consensus in the press was that it looked awesome. Its a nice addition to have even if you personally would not use it.

512MB of RAM will never have been worked so hard. :P

I was thinking that the PS3 might be well and truely taxed by 3D
Will we be getting a 3D upgrade hardware kit?

Invincible Tiger on PSN and XBLA is in 3D. If you have the telly and nicked a pair of those Real D glasses from the cinema, give it a go.

I reckon it will be included in games, but just as an optional extra. I doubt it will take off though, it would be a horrible strain on your eyes in a prolonged gaming session.

Personally I couldn't care less for 3D video games.

I saw a preview of the avatar movie in the cinema a few weeks ago and I remember thinking that it would be amazing for computer games!
