PLC Registration Fee - Does the Grant cover this?

    Hi all,

I'm supposed to be registering tomorrow for my PLC course, now I remember either someone telling me, or reading something online that if you were a medical card holder that you did not have to pay this fee.

I rang the college I'll be registering with and they didn't seem to know about this, and suggested ringing my local VEC (Galway City) and the person I was on the phone to didn't seem to know much about this either and couldn't give me a straight answer as to whether or not my registration fee will be reimbursed provided I get the grant?

It seems a little odd that you'll get your registration fee back no bother if your registering for an undergraduate course provided you get the grant etc... but there's uncertainty with regards to PLC courses..

I don't suppose anyone could shed any light on this could they?

    Thanks a million guys! :)

In reality your registration fee at the PLC college is not a registration fee - it is just a charge by the college to cover the costs of running the course, providing services to students etc. It is not the reistration fee that is charged by the Universities and Institutes of Technology. If you are a medical card holder then you are entitled to your FETAC fee free of charge.

my fees this year for a plc course were 450 euro. I have a medical card also but all that does for me is cover the exam fees which is 50 euro, but i still had to pay the 400 student services fee.. can i claim this amount back from the VEC as well as my grant ???

No, it won't cover this course. The HEG is only for degree courses "a full time undergraduate course of not less than two years in duration" or "a postgraduate course of not less than one year in duration, pursued in one of the approved colleges..." This document will have more information. Hope that helps.
