fairly straightforward fix , enter the ucd http proxy into the settings and port.

Yep - set it to use "https proxy" with settings proxy.ucd.ie, port 8484.

On a related note, I had a pleasant surprise today: Skype on the iPod Touch 2G (& iPhone I presume) was updated a few days ago, and now works behind the UCD proxy. I didn't have to change anything, so I guess it took the proxy settings I entered against the wireless configuration. :)
