We have been with Sky since 1993, and have always had the top packages. I rang up today to price getting a Sky Plus box. To my disgust, i was told it would cost €250 and i would have to wait for a new shipement, which will take over 2 months. New customers Sky plus and instillation for €50. Is this not a dreadful way to threat loyal customers. Is there anyway around this for me to get sky plus?? Thanks

try telling them your going to cancel. its to expensive and you miss a lot of sports and movies because everything you like is on at the same time.

no guarantee its going to work though.

it all depends on the agent you get.

tell them your thinking of moving to UPC to get the ability to record things that are on at the same time.dont worry if your not in a cable area , the idiots in Scotland/India wont any different.

I agree 100% its a crime that Sky give no consideration to existing customers. The only thing I'm confused about is the waiting time for a Sky Plus box. I'm an agent, Sky Plus is 80% of my business and if I couldn't get boxes for 2 months I'd be out of business. But also agree with above, call Sky and threaten to cancel, I've heard of Sky giving upgrades for new prices in the past.

Im terrible at saying something like that. My sister works in an office and is used to it so she says she will ring up and threaten to quit. My worry is that i will get an operator who will call my bluff. Im doing this for my dad, as he is retiring soon and would love sky plus. For someone who has sky for 16 years, he really deserves to be treated better. Would it be better/cheaper through a local agent?? Thanks for the replies

Exact same problem here too. I am with Sky for the last 6 years! :(

You certainly won't get it cheaper through a local agent, Sky set the pricing, but they often offer it cheaper directly or to selected agents. Any discount we give comes straight from my bottom line and Sky margins are minimal.

I can only speak from my experience and say that local agents will do a better installation than Sky Direct installers. Maybe someone here will contradict me, I've lurked here for a long time and know there are plenty of posters here with more experience than me.

Maybe i could get buy a sky box myself from ebay or somewhere and install it myself. I have a friend who works for NTL so maybe he would set it up out of hours for me if i can't.

Sky plus boxes are free to new customers (online) if thats any good to ya. why dont you get sky in your name( assuming you do not have it), cancel your dads sub and give it to him, after a few months cancel your own sub and let him rejoin (if he leaves for 12 months and comes back he is classed as a new customer, or so the sales agent in our sitting room said last night)

Sounds like a good idea, but we all have the same surname in this house so im sure they will smell a fish there.

Dont worry about the same surname.I just got mine changed under my wifes name and even used my bank account details that sky where taking money from for the past 3 years.

Just contact any agent thats close to you and tell them exactly what you want done and they will tell you everyone does it

If you are a new customer with sky you get great deals so next time ring them up and tell them that you are a long serving customer and that you want a deal thats the same as new customers. If that does not work ask for a supervisor. I have all sky packages except movies. I called looking for a special offer and the lady gave me the movies on top of my package for 3 months for 12euro less than what im paying for so stick in there.you will get ur good deal

Maynooth_Rules, The key to the bluff is to phone during normal work hours, you are likely to get through to Cork, and follow the menu prompts for 'Cancellations' do not threaten cancellation with a Sales person. They don't seem to care if you are threatening to cancel, it's the cancellations dept you want.

I have done this three times, got a Sky+ Box for me. my Parents and this year I got a 20% reduction off my sub for the next 12 months. A friend of mine also did this in the last few days and got the same reduction. It is like taking candy off a baby. Just phone up, no need to be aggressive or apologetic. Just say that things are hard, work dried up, UK Vat rate, unfair Sterling differential. These seem to be the buzz words that work, cue agent offering you a reduction and you say, well I'd prefer a free Sky+ box! You'll probably have to pay installation but you can offset this by flogging your old box on Adverts.ie If you feel uncomfortable with the agent, just hang up, cordless phones run out of power, terribly sorry about that, got cut off in my prime ;) Call back next day, get a different operator same shpiel, sob story, Vat rate etc. It works, so does the cancel and set up under a different name in the same house. Go on, you can do it!

I was hoping for a good deal with Sky. I'm an exisiting standard full package multiroom customer and genuinely nee to reduce my outgoings...so I called them last week and told them I wanted to get rid of sports and 3 of the other packages as I wasnt really getting the use out of them but I was hoping that they would cut me a bit of slack with a reduction. I really dont need these channels but would have kept them if they had given a reduction of course ;)I figured that sure I might as well chance it...but no !....the girl on the phone said no problem..and 3 hours later they were gone ! :pac: haha....so be careful anyone who hopes they wont call your bluff....they just might, going on my own experiences !......I was going to chance telling them I was cancelling if I could get the +HD package cheaper but dont think i'll risk it now ...might end up with nothing:rolleyes:

Was in the same position OP. With sky for 6 years andit would have been €250 to upgrade to sky+!

So, anyway, what i did was buy a sky+ box on adverts.ie for €55, and then installed myself. Then called sky up and they upgraded my sub to a sky+ sub, totally free of charge. The job of upgrading from standard to sky+ is actually very simple, just another line of coaxial cable from the dish. Certainly beats paying €250:)

Can you give me a bit of info on this mate. Is there much setting up to it. I know its not as simple as swapping one box for another. What else do i have to do. Any help would be appreciated. Where do i get the coaxial cable from:confused:, and do i not need to get something new for the dish??

Dammit, forgot about that. If you've had just a single sky box since the start, you probably only have a single lnb, which would probably have to be changed to a quad lnb. No matter, thats no big job either to be honest

Now i guess you'd have to buy a quad lnb in that case too, theyre about 20€ or so. What you could also do is buy a sky+ box on adverts, like i did. Then call up a local installer and just ask him for a quote on just putting in a new quad lnb and running another coax from the dish to the sky+ box. Thats a very small job for an installer so i cant imagine that costing a whole lot!

Judging by the name, you're in maynooth so you should have no problems finding a sky+ box on adverts.ie, there are plenty of them up around Dublin:)

Would an installer do this for you no problem? If so, anyone got an approx price for it? I'm in the Enfield area

Im going to try to set it up myself.....wish me luck!!! Can get a box for 60 euro. Need to purchase a LNB but can do that online. Where could i get the coax wire that i need for the second wire coming from the dish???

You shouldnt attempt to change an lnb from a single to a quad unless you have a meter as usually all good installers will adjust the dish or Skew of the Lnb as this will be necessary to do at least 90% of the time...its rare I get to stick up a quad without having to realign the dish that over time is not aligned perfectly...and this may work ok on a standard box but can lead to freezin issues on a sky+ box...

Balls!!! More money:(. Im assuming if i have the equipement and all i need the technician to do i set up the lnb, that it shouldn't cost much. I examined the single lnb today and its at an angle so i doubt i would be able to get the correct angle anyway with the new lnb.

Hi there I dont know if this is of much use to you but today I just googled Sky and went into the first site thats sky ireland I think and then I clicked on the 'already a sky customer' option and 'upgrade' and although I am a customer with just one standard sky box in sitting room I upgraded to sky+ and ordered a standard box for the bedroom (multiroom). By doing this online I got the sky+ box free the 2nd upstairs box free and the installation free. I dont know how to post a link up for you for the site sorry but i will try.

    Hey,

I tried the website from the previous poster and it didnt work for me unfortunately.
However! Called Sky up last night and told them I wanted to cancel our subscription and set up a new one in a different persons name. Told them why I was doing it and voila! Sky plus for free, no installation charge and priority installation so I'll have it in two weeks!!

Well worth a shot people; just dont give out your account number till you've secured the deal just in case they call your bluff ;)

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,549 ✭✭✭BlackEdelweiss

I tried to call their bluff, was offered sky plus for €79 and still tried to call their bluff. Sitting here now with about 10 channels, kids not happy.Going to do the setting up in a different name. How long so I have to leave it or can I do it straight away?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,549 ✭✭✭BlackEdelweiss

I rang up tonight to see could I sign up again, all I had to do was give a different phone number and nothing came up on the system. The guy gave me a free sky plus box when I asked him for it. €40 installation fee and it will be in next week. No sky till then though but I'm happy now, I got my free sky + box.
    Give it a try.

Thanks for this thread! I rang up there pretended i cudn't afford the upgrades and was goin to ntl- he gave me the new customer sky+ package with multiroom wit a free box for the same monthly cost but installation is 80! Otherwise i could have gotten standard sky+ for the same price- box free and installation for 15 euro! Wife wanted multiroom so went for the first deal!

Be careful there ok? They no longer do Sky+ so you would have gotten a Sky+HD box. The free box offer is available to customers who take the HD Subscription ( €15 per month ) and the multiroom sub is another €15 per month ( to existing customers )

Just be sure of what he offered you in case you find your bills go up drastically.
