    Hey Guys,

Pretty sure the timing chain is knackered in the car at the moment reason I'm saying that is because there is a clattering noise coming from the front of the engine.

The belt itself looks fine not able to see the chain without stripping the engine apart though....

I remember seeing this before on a couple of cars basicly happens when there isn't a enough oil and the metal goggs heatup causing it make a clattering noise.

The question I have is how much do you reckon this would cost to get it repaired?
It's other halfs car and from looking at it this morning man this car was low on oil when I removed the cover and checked the levels.

Topped her back up agian suprise surpise still the same noise from the front think the damage has been done already.

She rang up the garage ( poxy opel garage ) and the quoted 700Euro's to replace it, this seems a bit extreme what do you think?

    cheers
    mac

is the noise there just when started cold or is it always there?

My Opel Astra 1.4 is making the same noise. Apparently Opel have their own type of oil, recommended in the handbook! Think the damage was done when oil was changed in a service and different oil was put in.

I was told it's the timing chain too. Fortunately for me the 'now' boyfriend is a great mechanic, and it might only cost me a kiss ;)

It's a terrible rattle and is constant.

It's worst when the car is started from cold . Opel quote big prices for a simple job , if it's just the chain , it's only a 1.5 hr job for a good mehanic .

As far as I know, Vauxhall did a modified chain in the UK. early new model Astras and some Corsas were affected I think .

If the car is around 01 they have timing belts, it may be the hydraulic tappets.

current model has timing chain though, and they are noisy at the best of times, there is a common fault with them though.

Colm_mcm - what "common fault" are you referring to?

What are you basing this nugget of information on?

The listed time for this job is over 4.5 hours and it also requires a number of new gaskets, chain tensioner/guides/chain/possibly pullies if they are worn.

Special timing tools are also required to to the job.
