Taking car temporarily to NI

    Quick hypothetical question:

If you were to move to the North with your job for 6 months and wanted to take your car (06D BMW 316i ES), what's the process?

You'd need a certificate of conformity and the VLC, you'd need to pay £X for your NI registration plate (afaik it's £55stg).

If you're only there for 6 months, and only have the car there for 6 months, do you need to do the Single Vehicle Approval test/inspection? Do you need to switch your speedo to MPH? What else does it entail?

    I'm talking about doing this properly/legally btw - please don't suggest "work-arounds"... :D

Do you have to "import" it, I though you had 6month in the UK before that began an issue

AS far as I understand it, if you are going to be there less then 6 mths you can keep it on ROI plates more then six mths

Then book an MOT (NCT) test, pass the test, Get insurance, proof of ID plus NI address, Insurance Cert, Log book, Mot Cert, go to DVLANI and register and pay road tax for yr car, buy new number plates and yr car is a nordie one,

I'm pretty sure the SVA is only for cars from outside the EU, other than that you've got it covered.

Will the non-MPH clocks not cause an issue?

they shouldn't i dont think so, theres plenty of jap imports that say they have mot and are still on kmh clocks if you look around the various jap car forums

Why are you re-reg'ing it ? No need to, iirc.

Lots of ESB and Eircom vans spend a lot longer than that tootling around the UK with no issues.

“And my existence, while grotesque and incomprehensible to you, generates funds to the exchequer. You don't want to acknowledge that as truth because, deep down in places you don't talk about at the Green Party, you want me on that road, you need me on that road. We use words like freedom, enjoyment, sport and community. We use these words as the backbone of a life spent instilling those values in our families and loved ones. You use them as a punch line. I have neither the time nor the inclination to explain myself to a man who rises and sleeps under the tax revenue and the very freedom to spend it that I provide, and then questions the manner in which I provide it. I would rather you just said "thank you" and went on your way. Otherwise I suggest you pick up a bus pass and get the ********* ********* off the road”
