ok, not sure if i'm writing this in a completely irrelevent place but just wanted some advice from someone who has done a porfolio course?

i'm not sure if i want to go to art college, but i'v dropped out of academic uni in search of creativity.. i'm considering doing some kind of art course to get the juices going again so to speak..

i didn't do art in school, it's been a while since i did anything creatively challenging so i am incredibly rusty and probably not that great..
would a porfolio course be too much too difficult too soon, and are they geared soley towards getting in to colleges??
is there tuition or is it more 'guidance' on what you can already do, the skills you already have??..

thanks, and sorry if this is in the wrong place!!

You're posting in the right place alright - you should get some good advice here. To start the ball rolling, I think a portfolio course is a good idea in your case, as it will give you a chance to experiment with new media. You will get a chance to try out different styles, develop your skills and in time develop your own style. Doing a portfolio course would give you some direction - inevitably you will find out quite quickly if the "arty" route is for you, but more specifically you will get a chance to explore and figure out which aspect you prefer to focus on. If the fine art side is what you want to get into, then your portfolio can reflect this with an aim at applying for NCAD etc. Otherwise, perhaps you would like a Graphic Design Course, or Jewellry Design etc. etc. Give yourself the time and space to experiment this year I think :)

    Good luck!

Portfolio courses are more guiding you into a finished set of pieces of work for entry to art college.

They aren't art classes but the tutors will help you with techniques and push you in different areas. I wanted to do make-up for film and tv so the head tutor would help give me ideas to try out. My portfolio on soley aimed at getting onto that course whereas with others it was more broadly focused. (But you could still see people's strengths - graphics, fine art, sculpture)

I think being in such a creative environment with others, you tend to think about mad stuff and that helps you along too.

Are you planning on doing one this year or next as I'm sure most courses have started already?
