    yep, got good deal on Slieve Bloom sandstone random rubble from wesellstone.com in Roscrea. The stone on house is gorgeous now we're finished. It was considerably cheaper than quarries I priced in every province. Got the sandstone sills from them too and they really look the part.

    I got 85 tonnes of building stone for somewhere round 6,000, maybe slightly more. Sills for whole house were bout 2,500 (we've lots of windows and a conservatory). Sills are dear but well worth it IMO.

    The building of full house, front of garage, walls, piers, fireplaces will have taken 3 masons the guts of 4 months and about €30,000.
    All in all, the entire stone, sills, building, etc. will have cost slightly over €40,000 but it looks really well and will be maintenance free except for a power hose every few years maybe.

    Just to say I've no commercial connections with the stone suppliers, I just found their stone the nicest and the best value.

    If you do go down the road of a random rubble, I'd be very careful of what stone mason you choose. It's much harder and slower to work with than a guillotine stone and if it's done badly, it won't look well. Our head mason is 65, and takes his time..

    Could anyone recommend a good stone mason in the Kilkenny/Carlow area.

    Also would be great to hear a cost per m2 for putting stone on the outside of a two storey house?

    Castlewarren,
    I don't know any stonemasons down that way but in relation to cost, you could spend up to €100 per square metre for the labour. You may get guys that'll do it for €60 or €70. To be honest, I'd ask around for the best guy and get him. You may spend an extra couple of grand but it'll be worth it. This would be even more so if you're using random rubble; guillotine would be easier to work with and a less experienced mason would probably still do a grand job.

    We (Sligo area) got whole house done (approx 2900 sq ft) in lovely limestone. Paid approx €900 per load of stone (8), and €22000 labour.....highly satisfied woth end result.

    <SNIP>

    if your planning on putting natural stone on your house it is best to get the manson involved from the start as DPC will have to be left you over windows etc.
    a little done well is better than a lot slapped up.
