The a1 (much like the real steal version) has loads of problems and not realy worth the investment!

However my brother just bought the Star L85a2 and its is a solid piece! great rof, great weight and looks the shiz! hope that helps some :p

Just got a Star L85 A2 today, very impressed with it. There is a good heft to it like the real thing at just over 4kgs, its the heaviest AEG in my collection. Holding it with one hand on the grip, it leans to the rear and does not balance like the AUG. It sort of leans into the shoulder so you don't notice the weight when aiming and shooting.

Comes with a metal midcap mag that is designed after the real Royal Ordinance mag which has little differences to Armalite 5.56 mags. You wouldn't notice unless you were looking for them. The AEG has realistic trades on the base of the mag, the mag well and the handguard.

The only concern is that the gearbox is plastic, Ares are now making their own L85s and they have more durable metal gear boxes, the gear boxes are sold on their own so they can be fitted into the Star L85s if and when the plastic ones wear out. I would have got an Ares L85 but didn't want to risk waiting for them to come back in stock with the import ban looming and went for the Star instead, most places seem to be out of the Ares versions and there is a long wait time expected, 1-2 months from what I was told.

Anyway very happy with the AEG and I'd recommend to anyone who likes the look of this or bullpups in general.

Where did you pick up the Star?

A1 = bad, deffo avoiding dont worry!

The A1s are hard to get in high end AEGs, there are a limited number of G&G A1s around, Army Armaments do an A1 clone that is very hit and miss on quality, the A2s seem to be better.

I got got my Star A2 from ehobbyasia, they swapped out the spring for me when I asked very nicely, they don't usually do down grades but the Star and Ares are easy to do. I believe I got the last of their stock.

The Star L85 A2s are on special offer at $235 USD in most online retailers, some retailers are still charging the higher amount so they may have older stock.

WGC are out of both Star and Ares L85s and don't know when they'll have them back in stock. They have some of the other SA80 variants though.

Good luck in finding one at the newer prices. Search around and you should dig one up.

Actually the a1 aegs are not all bad... I have an army one that works fine... great skirmish weapon... and my main arm at milsim games...

Star ones.. dont worry about, the ARES coming out are cheaper, and the same gun, but fixed :D so the issues that folk had with star sa80a2's at first, are sorted, and no more plastic fantastic gearbox \o/

In the battle of the a2s, id go for an ares/star over the g&g... the blowback idea is... fancy, but useless, and as you disable it anyway to make it work reliably, why bother to pay extra for a plinking fun thing?

Because when yore Star/Ares breaks you have about as much chance of getting parts for it as you do growing a third set of teeth.,

I don't like any of them but if i had to choose it would be the Army or the G&G, at least theres 2 company's that produce spare parts for them.

fire-support.co.uk stock the full range of all internal parts for the Ares and Star L85s, thats why I picked it over the G&G in the end. Ares produce every thing for it now. If I had no chance of ever fixing it when it goes bad then yeah the G&G would be the wise investment.

Not for plinking :) Dont get the appeal, its going to be for skirmishing. Just like the look i suppose!

The ability to get spares is important, already have a Masada which im not sure how easy its going to be to get spares for!

You're doing well to get that AEG, never mind parts for it.:D

Nah, think that mainly uses your standard M4 AEG internals, wouldn't worry about it.

Funny enough I have an Army SA80A1 that has never given me even the slightest trouble too. I guess the SA80 is a bit like the Tavor, some people have bad luck, some people have good.

Personally, while I do want an A2, because I'd like the updated mag release and charging handle like on the real one I've used, I can't justify spending the money on it until my A1 has discombobulated.

If I had my time over, and had heard all the awful reports on the Army A1, then I'd go for a G&G A2 straight off the bat, but I got lucky and touch wood my A1 isn't going to die any time soon.

Never really considered STAR because of the plastic gearbox, but with a metal gearbox ARES might be worth a shot. Easier to work on the G&G from what I've heard though.

Had trouble with my Army one.
Misfires, double and tripple feeding, fireing hot and cold,
Needing to pull the triger twice to fire once! weird.

Pull trigger once and hear the moter go for a slit second has if the piston is drawn back but the cycle is not complete. Gun stops does not fire. Pull trigger again gun fires normally! or spits out 2 bb's.

If you switch the electric blowback off it causes more problems it seems to work better with it left on.

I never bothered trying to look at it since it gets no use.

Build quality is very nice and its comfortable to hold and aim. Rubber butt plate and balance is nice, Pluse
the electric blow back makes a nice clatter.

Army brand as far as I know is not compatible with
the Star SUSAT unless there is some modification done.

Works fine with the G&G SUSAT though, and the STAR SUSAT is currently out of production as far as I know, although there may be an ARES one floating about.

The Star ones are still around, fire-support has them is regular stock for the past few months, they order in about 30 units at a time. They have it listed as the ''improved version'' which I believe to be the Ares version even though the hard carry case still has the Star name on it.

They do the jobs nicely, have two of them. One for skirmishing that has the off center reticule but does not effect point of aim and impact and the other as a backup/show piece.
