    Hi all,

    My sons PSP has died.

Its the UMD, the Red laser isnt lighting up and there is no movement from the UMD motors, nothing is moving.

I discovered it all came from little fingers touching the parts inside the UMD!

Naaturally we are out of warranty.

Does anyone no if this is repairable? And can anyone recommend a good repair shop that I can send this into? Or are there any places in Galway I can take it into?

ALso Any ideas if you think this is a common problem and fixable? And any ideas of repairable cost?

The PSP has had a firmware downgrade, will this be a problem?

    Many THanks for your help

The UMD laser is definitely replaceable. The only place I know of is Console Repairs Ireland, but they're located in Bray, Co. Wicklow. You can post to them but I'm not sure how much use that is to you. I once repaired a PSP screen, you can find a whole plethora of PSP parts on eBay and DealExtreme, including UMD lasers, so if you're confident enough in your repairing ability you could always try and fix it yourself.

It'll cost you about €20 for the parts to do it yourself, so I'd imagine a repair place would charge you €40 maybe? I doubt they'd upgrade the firmware on you, I've only ever heard of Sony's repair place doing that.
