Anyone seen this movie? It's a sex spoof sequel - quite risqué - certainly not for kids. For some reason Dunnes are selling the DVD for €5! Bet they don't realise what they're selling.

Surely it has an age rating on it?

Sounds like this should be posted in "Bargain Alerts" on CI.
Are you outraged at the price or that Dunnes is selling porn {to over 18's only}.
If it was been sold for 50€ would you be happier ?

    It's not porn it's a sex comedy - like Porky's or something.

I don't really think this is a "Consumer Issue". Dunnes are selling a DVD that, I'm assuming, contains strong sex references, nudity, etc. which I doubt are on the cover. As a previous poster pointed it, it will have an age rating (the BBFC rated it 18s in the UK with "no cuts made" in May 1991, so I'd guess it's 18s here, too) so children won't be able to get their hands on this easily.

I don't see the problem with it, really.

What age rating is on the box?

So? they sell plenty of 18 rated movies in their stores, you can buy the American Pie movies for €5 each as well and they're just as raunchy

"Real" porn movies in the US have an X-Rating, films that are considered extremely unsuitable are NC-17. And next is an R rating, which is the the majority of the films which are 15's / 18's over here, get in the US.

Flesh Gordon is R-rated.. so it's 2 certifications from being considered "real" porn.. it has the same rating as films like 'District 9' and 'Inglourious Basterds'.

Its a DVD with a childish cover but an adult DVD in the case there was an incident last weekend in Dunnes Stores in Wexford were the DVDs were put on sale on saturday morning and the afternoon a very angry mother (understandable) returned to Dunnes after her son watch the DVD. The DVDs were removed from shopfloor and memo was sent out to all stores for the DVD to be withdrawn from sale

To be fair, it would be very easy to see Flesh and read Flash esp with the artwork being mild and comic book styled.

    That was my point - it's a soft-porn film not a Porkys/American Pie type-movie. Dunnes just don't realise what they're selling.

To partys are at fault here:
    - Dunnes for perhaps selling the film to a minor...but if they sold it to the mother they did nothing wrong

    - Ultimately the mother is at fault more then Dunnes as she bought a film not suitable for a kid with the intended job of allowing a kid to watch it, the parent failed in their basic duty by simply looking at the films age rating and making a call based on that.

So I blame the parent, doesn't matter what time it was on sale or what the cover looked like, the age rating info is clearly displayed and the parent failed to look at it,

Or if they did look at it they still allowed the kid to watch a unsuitable film

It may well be they are not aware of what they are selling.

Recently during a busy spell I spent days on end on my desktop editing which I have in the sitting room, this way I can look after the kids whilst working. My 7 year old was watching pop girl and station aimed at young girl. During the adverts an insurance ad came on which insinuated sexual activity. I was shocked. The joys of sky plus meant I could rewind and make sure I wasnt seeing things. I wasn't.

So I Promtly e-mailed the station explaining what I had seen and the time I had seen it. I explained that I wasn't happy that my daughter was watching a station which would allow such advertising. The station e-mailed me back the following morning explaining that the advert had been cleared by their team although now this had been raised they reviewed the ad and realised that in fact it was not suitable and had removed it straight away. Even posted out a special t-shirt for my daughter. You have to realise sometimes the person who gives the go ahead may not notice exactly what is in front of them so you really should let Dunnes know what you have seen and let them deal with it.

The cover can be viewed on Amazon's website here.

Two things that immediately strike me:
    1. The word "sex" near the top left"
    2. A clearly visible 18s age rating

As pointed out by Cabaal, Dunnes did nothing wrong if they sold this to the mother. It's equivalent to a mother purchasing Bruno when it's released and letting little Johnny watch that. Dunnes are perfectly entitled to sell it and the mother to buy it. Dunnes aren't responsible for who sees it after that.

I hear they sell knives, alcohol and cigarettes in Dunnes too. Ban this sick filth!

Really, they sell a number of other 18 rated DVDs and probably games too. Shops sell stuff like this. There is nothing wrong with doing that. They are just obliged to not sell them to under 18s. Did this child involved in the complaint buy the DVD himself, which Dunnes shouldn't allow, or did the mother buy it and ignore the rating?

Is OP high? Dunnes are selling a DVD that's 18s. It's a sex spoof comedy, the artwork has scantly clad women on it and an 18 cert. Not something a parent should get their child. It seems to me parents can't be bothered to check these things and blame everyone other then themself.

In fact, Dunnes should have refused to return the item as there was nothing wrong with it.

Very stupid mother more like, people just dont bother reading things properly and blame everyone else for their own mistakes, modern Ireland in a nutshell

I wonder if the till flashes up 'Is the customer over 18? Check Id before continuing with the sale' when you scan the DVD, like it does for knives..

Odd for Dunnes to sell it, it was probably rotting in a warehouse somewhere. Mother's fault though.

Thats what I wonder, if it did come up I would have mentioned it to her, well if she looked like it wasn't for herself.

Yes, if it was 20+ years ago it would be a bit more understandable, but with simpsons, family guy, american dad etc people know that animated and apparent "kids films" can be filthy. TV3 give warnings when american dad comes on. Still I think she might not have been as wary being in dunnes, you would just not expect it to be on sale.

But we still don't know- her son could be 16 and bought it himself. Great excuse "where did you get this filthy porn!?!" "ehh dunnes, I scanned your points card ma, don't worry"

Yea it flashes up on the screen when you sell anything with an age rating, flashes up for 12 and 15 movies too. Well it does in Dunnes anyway don't know about other shops!

To be honest, one look at that DVD cover tells me it's not for kids. It's up to the mother, not the store to regulate what her child watches. There's a clear age rating. Fair enough, the traditional idea is that animations are for kids, but as the previous poster said with things like family guy and american guy that's changed now and parents just have to be vigilant. My parents wouldn't let me watch The Simpsons until I was about 10! :pac:

Well, I listened in horror as a little girl of 7 quite innocently told me that her favourite song was called "Spin". When I asked her "what song is that?" she launched into "You spin me right round baby right round, when you go down, when you go down, down".

She did dance moves and all. Told me shed seen it on TV. My gob hit the floor.

I imagine the song writer is not talking about going "down" to the shops.

Apparently this is reported in some newspaper today, Tom Dunne was just talking about it.

I can only presume the source of the story originated here as usual.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,496 ✭✭✭JohnC.

It was in The Sun. A story and a bit in the comments section. Yes, The Sun of all papers, complaining about smut.

I was in Dunnes over the weekend and they had lots of 18s DVDs, like Saw and various other horror/gory movies.

What makes Flesh Gordon so different that it warrants complaining about? FFS people need to take responsibility. If someone is stupid enough to buy an 18s rated dvd for their kids, with an adult cover, with an adult TITLE, and then let their kids watch it without even reading the back, they should take responsibility for their own idiotic mistakes!

This sort of rubbish irritates me because I had to deal with stupid parents every day when I worked in a DVD shop... parents thinking they were entitled to a refund on Grand Theft Auto after buying it for their seven year old and ignoring the blatant age rating and the suggestively posed women on the cover. Parents ASKING their kids whether or not an 18s rated game was suitable for them when we pointed out the rating. Parents coming into the shop angry with us for refusing to sell rated games or dvds to their unaccompanied children.

I can't see why people would complain about this, unless they feel embarrassed for making such a ridiculous mistake and it's somehow the shop's fault. Is personal responsibility REALLY such a foreign concept?

Think I'll go buy saw and show it to my 4 year old. Then complain to Dunnes for selling me a dvd that I showed my young son that has a keen interest in DIY.

Yeah saw this on the sun "newspaper aka rag" while I was waiting in a shop today, you';d think they'd at least credit boards.ie for the story.

Bloody so called journalists sometimes

Has anyone ever watched the movie in question? It's not even really soft porn, there's no real sexual interaction, just a lot of breasts and the occasional bush. It's actually quite amusing really, and some of the set pieces are very well done in a comical manner....Nothing to get overly excited over, excuse the pun...

That eminem song "shake that ass for me" was on Spin this morning at 9am. Guess you get non-sensored stuff all the time on all types of media. Cant cover their eyes and block their ears 24/7.

Did she also buy 2 litres of cider for the boy thinking it was apple juice? And condoms as balloons for his party next week? Man, this kid is going to turn out all messed up when he grows up!

as a teacher, you would be shocked at the amount of stuff some parents blame everything for, my child threw an apple at you because I bored him etc etc. SOme parents love washing their hands of responsibility and blame society/life/govt/Postman Pat etc
