jailbreak problems

i know i sound like such an idiot here, but oh dear god, why oh why isnt jailbreak working for me! i have a 16 gig 3g which i have jailbroken previous firmwares on. Upgraded to 3.0.1, attempted to use 0.8 redsn0w with the version 3.0 firmware as described.
The redsn0w programs runs through fine, says done at the end and leaves me with a black screen. I will add that i dont get the downloading jailbreak software part on my phone, it goes white, then black then freezes.
Im running windows 7, and the app itself in windows xp sp3 compatibility mode, as an administrator.

If it's freezing at the point where it says "waiting for reboot", then you may need to unplug and plug-in the cable, to prompt it to continue.

ya tried that. last time i had similar problems, ended up restoring to a already jailbroken custom firmware.

i'm having exactly the same problem. process initially stalls at reboot step. when i force a reboot by holding down off/home keys, the seems to continue until everything stalls at the end with a blank screen (despite the dialogue box saying "jailbreak completed"). i also don't get the downloading jailbreak software screen. i have a new iphone 3Gs and am wondering if there has been a security upgrade in the firmware or iTunes?

after hours of trying, jailbreaking definitely doesn't have the allure it had before i started...

I had problems jailbreaking when running redsn0w on Vista on my 3Gs. Then tried it again - same version on XP and it worked a charm. My advice is to try using a different computer.

so far i have tried windows 7, xp sp3 and windows server 2003. going to wipe laptop and try again soon.

All on the same laptop though? I think these issues are typically USB related, so changing OS but using the same PC won't help. You need to try on a different PC altogether if you are still having problems.

nope, 3 different laptops too (oh the geekiness of it!). The only common part was the usb cable, but its the same one i use to synch and do updates on phone, so dont think thats the issue. I have another retractable cable, ill try that instead tonight.
