New adventures in home recording

Got ProTools up and running and eventually recorded something.

I've decided to start and tone samples thing on SoundClick where I'll compare different speaker types, guitars, pick ups, amps etc. with otherwise similar recording set ups.
The idea will to close mike everything with the SM57 mid way between the centre and outer rim of the speaker, all amp and pedal setting will be at noon, guitars will have volume and tone @ 10 and abolutley no post EG ing whatso ever. I'm limiting it like this because otherwise the permutations would get impossible.
I'll list details of exactly what you're hearing in the file description.
This should hopefully give you some decent examples of what various pieces of kit sound like when compared to each other on an equal footing.
I've a bunch of different kit myself and I've asked a few of the lads at the rehearsal space if I can record some of their gear too so it sould be pretty all round.

This first sample pairing is my JMP 50 with the inputs bridged (everything at 5 and it's completely stock at the mo), Les Paul '06 Faded Tobacco with stock burstbuckers, HotPlate on -12dB (I wont be doing any samples less than -12dB on the HotPlate dont worry:D!!) no effects.
The two samples are intended to demonstrate the tonal difference between the Celestion G12H speaker and the V30.
Don't mind the playing, I'm still getting to this and I'm keeping it deliberatley simple so I can be uniform in what I play on each sample.

    Lemme know whatcha think.

Nice tone man (gotta love those Marshalls), I prefer the V30. It is a little bright compared to the G12H but just seems more lively to my ears and I guess in use an EQ tweak would dial back the brightness.

I'm a little surprised at the amount of gain on the JMP to be honest.

Looking forward to your other tone tests.

Cheers, the '71 model was/is a gain monster alright!! It starts to break up a little with volume around 2!! This sample also had the channel jumpers for a little more sizzle.

The V30 and G12H are both in the same 2 X 12 and they really compliment each other, G12 with it's thicker lows and V30s punchier mids.

For tone compares I'll be using the everything at midnight setting but from time to time I'll post clips of how I'd dial it.

Samples to come include more speaker tests including G12T-75s, some pre amp valve tests (EH vs JJ vs Tung Sol vs SovTek vs Chinese vs NOS Mullard, Siemens, Pinnacle, and also different types 12AX7 vs 12AU7 vs 12AT7 vs 5751) and a bunch of other stuff.

I'd be interested in those tests...my Jubilee could use some new pre amp valves and it's a toss up between the JJs and Tung Sols from what I've been reading.
