Rest days

I'd normally restrict myself to at least one rest day a week and it's nearly always Friday but I've got shockin' ants in my pants today so it raises the question:

How much can you do on a rest day and still consider it a rest day?

From my opinion it depends on if it's going to effect my profomance the next training session.
For example if you're going for a heavy squat session today and you're planning on working on high kicks tomorrow - that just ain't going to work.
However if you're planning on going for a swim today and a tough session tomorrow it might do you the power of good - get the fast twitch muscles working, etc.
I personally think you're crazy training on a rest day :pac:

I read a Dan John article on this recently, well actually on inter-set rests but he touched on this too.

    Might help.

I know exactly how you feel. I normally take two rest days a week (Friday and Sunday), but i am really antsy today and want to hit the pads. I know that wont work because tomorrow is the normally the toughest session of the week. On my Friday rest days i do nothing but on the Sunday rest days i usually do some active rest ie walking in Glendalough, running with the dogs etc.

i dont bother having planned rest days anymore, i just keep them for the times I cant drag myself out of bed in the morning to hit the gym . normally happens around once every 7 or 8 days .. i dont think it matters as long as your not pushing yourself to the limit every day or working the same muscles ..

Interesting article. I don't think I could sleep for 12 hours a day except maybe once a week (and I'm not given that opportunity by my lovely daughter ;)).

I should probably just shut up and take it easy today. I worked hard this week and my fitness and weight are both good at the moment.

I think the ants in pants comes from not walking as much as I had been. With the collapse of the train bridge over Malahide estuary I'm walking about 5K less per day.

    Dunno.
Your conclusions are your own to draw.

I do like the suggestion that I should sleep 12 Hours a day.

Maybe go for a walk if your really itching to do something, but rest is crucial to making progress, and preventing injuries

Or go the active recovery route if you qre ocd-ing to do something.

I have trained twice a day ( early and late ) without missing a day for about 3months. I must have a problem but at this stage it's so ingrained into my routine that I never miss.

That said, it's very varied eg. swimming, cycling, sprint training, hill running, upper and lower body weights sessions, gaa training, bit of soccer,

However, I'm starting to wonder if less is more, has anyone tried both tactics :

    1. training religiously every day with very little total rest
    2. concentrating on quality / intensity but less training sessions and more rest

Its Friday - take a brisk walk to the off licence, then into 'Golden Balls wok' (or whatever) - go home and chill.

Important to monitor your heart rate incase it rises anything more than 10 BPM above resting - anymore and your training!.

Watch Corrie at 7:30 and The Late Late (Ryan Tub loses his virginity tonight).

"Tomorrow is a good day to die" as Sitting Bull (or some injun fvcker said).

You could always try something like bowling, taking your frustration out at the driving range etc. You get that mental buzz from hitting a good drive or bowling a strike, without it being too taxing on your body. It mightn't suit everyone but it's something to do on a rainy day when you're not training. Works for me anyway!
