On a turbocharged car it's a good idea to let them cool down for a little bit before turning them off.

Could've been something as simple as the fan slowing down to a stop. is the noise always there after switching off?

Most cars these days with electric fans, i.e. not driven off the crankshaft, they will keep running depending on the thermostat when you turn the ignition off

What he said. It's quite normal for the fan to keep running for a few minutes after a long or spirited drive.
