Hi , I am living in Mullingar and was wondering if there is anyone that could tell me If Digiweb Metro is good enough for online gaming. I really dont want to get a landline in. I have emailed Digiweb to ask this question and the told me that metro has the lowest latency of all broadband and that it was ideal for gaming. I would just like someone who is a customer of theres to confirm it before I sign up. Thanks

I had digiweb for a year, a lot of problems with over charging and getting cut off for going over limit etc. But if you know you are not going to use it too much (to go over the limit) you should be fine. I tested my line a few times, it was supposed to be 8mb but was only 3 or 4 usually. Ignore what they tell you on the phone when you look to buy (ie. best latency in ireland, best for gaming etc) because they will tell you anything to get a sale (they are salesmen).
For me (dundalk) it was €100 connection, and €35 a month for 8mb with a cap of 30gb, to add an extra 10gb on to the cap was €10 per month.
I usually ended up paying €52 a month for the package with an extra 20gb cap on a 12 month contract (digiweb have a strict policy - no matter what happens you will pay for all 12 months)

In my opinion go with a landline broadband service (3mb+ will give you no problems even with multiple users at the same time) with no download limit because there is nothing more annoying than a ****ing download limit. And probably the biggest fault I found with digiweb ........ -it depends on the weather!!!!

I know a few people with Metro in Limerick, and they all get typical pings of 20-30ms to Irish based websites. More than adequate for gaming, as good or better than DSL and cable.

The cap is something you agree to when you sign up, and Digiweb strictly enforce it, so you've no one to blame but yourself if they throttle you for going over.

Firstly, Fibre-To-The-Home has the lowest latency in the country, where residential broadband is concerned. So they lied to you.

Secondly, UPC would get ~15ms latency to an Irish site, and most likely an Irish gaming server. So they'd probably be the second lowest in the Irish residential market.

That's all I have to offer. I have never tried Digiweb Metro, but I do hear that they enforce the download limit quite strictly, in line with what the other two posters have said above me.

Ping times are better than most DSL packages (because the interleaving is set high by eircom). However, it being wireless, the pings can vary a good bit. This can have a poor effect *sometimes* in *some* games.

For e.g. in UT4, pings of 30-45ms are not a problem at all. However pings varying between 20 and 45ms make the game a lot harder to enjoy. Metro ping ranges sometimes make UT4 poor, like this, for me. However most times (and I play a stint most evenings) it's fine.

DSL tends to have slightly higher pings, but more stable. So it depends on what game you play a lot. Most UDP-fast action shoot 'em ups will love a decent ping stability and sub 30-40ms is best. Metro can do this most nights, but there are some nights that it does vary quite a bit. If I were to hazard a guess, I'd say 1 in 10 nights would be a bit hairy at peak time.

Finally, it depends on the contention on your mast (Mullingar). I know it's been fine on much denser population sites (like Tallaght), but it might be worth hunting down a Mullingar-based Metro reviewer for the final say.

Happy to do some pings/traces if you want.

Thanks a million for all your replies. Ye have been a great help . The download limit will not bother me to much because I dont really download much stuff . I just surf and game . E21man What part of town are ya in ? Im just wondering cos Im in beechgrove and still have to get the survey done from digiweb to see if I can pick up the signal from there mast.

Im in greenpark so in line of sight of the mast its behind arramount furniture just in case you didnt know that.
I left Imagine due to its ping times and the fact that due to my distance from the exchange i could never download any faster than 3mb.
In the time ive been with digiweb ive had no hassle at all always averaged 1.2mb down and .98 up but if you only want it for gaming i really only ever play TF2 and ive had no problems with that.
Out of interest we have just had ntl digging up the road here any sign of them in beechgrove possibilty you could go with ntl in the next coming months who may be better but we might not get offered broadband so i could be jumping the gun

I had a letter from ntl a few weeks ago saying that they would be working in my area soon and I should talk to the workmen to see if I could get it it at my house but I havent seen any of them here yet. I havent played TF yet I must give it a try . Im a battlefield 2 addict lol

The mast is actually further down than Arramount, it in Forest Park at the ESB substation, at the opposite side of the large unit which houses Curves Gym.Anyone here have any success getting Metro on the Lynn Road area of the town? I am fighting with digiweb over the dreadful conjestion on my line in the evenings on their DSL 7.6 service. The tell me they have only 60 metro subscribers in Mullingar so Im thinking this bottleneck might not be present on the Metro service seeing as there are only a small amount of subscribers and it works well in much busier areas. Any other reports on Metro quality in Mullingar?

I can answer my own question here: My area of Lynn Road is a non runner, Digiweb told me they have already done a survey for my next door neighbour and Metro is a non runner. Looks like its a wait for the UPC upgrade to happen sometime next year.
