    Hi all
A buddy of mine has what he thinks is a good idea. I however think hes only asking for trouble.
He currently is a student in the uk, and has bought a car. Problem is it has no tax or mot. He reckons he could drive it around by putting plates of an irish car on it as the police there wont have access to any irish databases(its a completely different car). The irish car has no tax or insurance either:rolleyes:. He is insured on the uk car with the correct reg number.
So how long before he gets fined do ye reckon?

He is insured on the uk car with the correct reg number.

Well that's a waste of money because if he gets in an accident all records will show he's driving an Irish car - not the UK car that the insurance company is insuring.

With his lack of respect for the law he will likely be only going around in the car a day or so before the gets pulled over for a minor traffic offence, cops will then see either no Irish Tax and Insurance on the car or a set of crap quality forgeries which will add another penalty to him.

This would not be wise. Not having tax is not good, but not a hanging offence. This is a form of fraud, which would look much worse on your record.

The UK police might not have routine access to the Irish data, as in it automatically coming up on their car computer, but a phone call will get them the details if your mate is stopped. If the Irish reg has no insurance and tax then they will seize the car and then check the engine number etc.

If he can't afford a car, he should just go on the bus.

UK police have no access to a foreign country's vehicle records. Not at the mere dial of a number, anyway.

UK police have no interest in whether a foreign registered car is taxed in it's country of origin. I agree, however, that they do have an interest in whether the driver is insured to drive it in the UK.

I know that the car is actually a UK reg'd car disguised as an Irish reg, but the police won't know this at first glance.

I'm all for scams but this is a bit stupid. If he's stopped at a checkpoint and they check his insurance they'll see its the wrong number plate. No insurance is far worse than no tax!

No offense, but your mate sounds like a complete idiot.

Actually. I think he should do it. That way, when he gets caught (and he will get caught) he'll get the biggest kick in the hole for himself, which sounds like its needed tbh. Doing what he wants to do is the height of illegality.

It is a condition of entry to a State that visiting vehicles have met the requirements of the law in their home of registration. If this were not the case then a significant loophole would be available to avoid taxes of all sorts. In particular Ireland and the UK have agreements on mutual recognition of motor tax dating back 50 years.

Now in Britain the authorities might not be as familiar with ROI formalities as in NI, but the principle (and probably the law) is the same

'hmmm, what stupid thing will I do today,(thinks), I know, I'll put Irish plates on my English reg car, that'll be fun!!'

Eh no it won't,he's an idiot!! BUT if he does get away with it then I'm glad, I wouldn't hope anything bad on anyone. Maybe next week though he could just throw a camouflage sheet over the car, that way, the police will never stop him 'cos they'll just think it's a bush..!!
