'Alarming' amount of salt being consumed

I'm not convinced about the need for alarm to be honest. If you do any sort of exercise at all, you'll easily sweat out the salt intake from processed foods. If you're living a totally sedentary lifestyle, then that's a whole other issue in itself.

totally agree with that .. anybody breaking a sweat for 30 minutes a day most days of the week will be getting rid of a lot of salt, water consumption also plays a big part ..
.. i know I was starting to get cramps a while back when I was living on fruit and veg and lean meats because I wasnt getting enough (hardly any) salt .. if your not sweating regularly or not drinking enough water then it might be a different story

My local bike shop was commenting about how I ride hard, and I asked how could they know? "From the salt crystals caked on your face."

The normal salt recommendations are based on a possibly hyper-tensive couch potato. If you are healthy and exercise hard, you can eat a lot more without problems, and in fact, probably need to, or you'll run into problems with cramps.

Mind you, if you are trying to eat well, you are probably not eating too much bread, box cereals or ready meals, the three main sources of salt.
