Food and Travel channels and what about those groupings?

I know it has been discussed earlier but I still find it strange that three main categories of special interests are missing:

    1. Food,
    2. Proper travel channel and,
    3. Culture other than pop music (not of my taste but still missing).

According to the "black holes" in the EPG there seems to be plenty of space for UKTV's FOOD channel (now called Good Food I believe), The Travel Channel (which broadcasts FTA on a number of sats) and what about a proper Culture channel with classical music, Opera etc?

Neither can I understand, The Den and now Cula4 as separate channels. All the Euronews channels in different languages has also way past by my sense of understanding. Seriously DCTV? Does anyone EVER watch this?

I can't help laughing when I look at the line up for (what UPC calls) The Lifestyle Channels.

The only channels that would vaguely fall in under this category would be:

E!, Fashion TV and Maybe Home.

Here UPC have chosen Bravo (Trash channel of the year), QVC (Shopping), Investigation Discovery (Isn't this a Documentary genre), and Discovery Real time (which again, technically, would fall under Documentaries).

Overall, in my opinion, the selection of channels are not quite right. I have included some kind of Cultural channel (for classical music etc) as missing even though I wouldn't watch it, but there are people out there who would!

Would it make any difference to ask UPC for such: My guess would unfortunately be no :( , but one is always allowed to hope for something better...

Oh, and there are 16 kids channels!!! How much TV can kids watch these days...???

FYI, I believe all the Euronews channels take up only the space of one channel for video and then use different and much smaller audio streams for each different language. So it efficiently uses the space.

But I agree with your other points.

Definately would love to have the Good Food Channel. So much so, Im contemplating moving to Sky digital. Would rather stay with UPC but I will eventually move.

We should start emailing UPC asking for them to get this channel

Digi signal bandwith is a finite resource and due to that they'd have to set channels accourding to the popularity, basically the line up they haev reflects the wants to the majority.

Taste is personal but as "culture" channel lovers are in the minority, wont bring more revenue into UPC as the likes of Bravo would then your stuck with the wants of the masses.

With HD service taking more bandwith (approx x3 times more than a standard channel) the space left for additional channels or specialised channels is space at least. You cant change the laws of physics to accomidate so the only work around other than switching to a different transmission type is to compress and unpack the data streams more effectively. Unfortunatly even if this happens your still left the the fundamental problem being that the majority would want more "trashy" channels. Upc are here to make money and the better way to do that is to cater to the wants of the majority.

So you are telling me that there is a larger audience for channels such as Buzz and Smile? I highly doubt it. I think UPC takes what's cheap so they can advertise "hundred's of channels" instead of a few quality channels.

I believe a "culture" type channel would add more subscribers, a segment who would have the money to spend rather than adding more trash, which there is more than enough of... :(
