Hi all, New to this & just want to see if you have any opions on the above. I bought 1.5 years ago and it was great but I've discovered it's not what I was looking for. it's a 5 seater and should have got a 7 seater. it's petrol should have got a diesel. comfortable to driver on a long journey plenty of boot space fits 3 car seats. But with these county roads & pot holes it needs repair quite often.

anyone esle with the same problem or have an opinion on this car.
    Thanks
    Mmc.

fantastic car......trouble free ( mazda are brill for relability) and very spacous too (sp) love the boot space. in fairness its a jcb you'd need for irish roads:D

those who know me, know, so I'll keep it short: I have the opposite problem.

    Bought a 7 seater, when a 5 is plenty.........
Bought a Mazda, when anything else would've done...........
Bought a Diesel Mazda, which was a complete and utter disaster. Avoid any common rail RF Mazda diesel like the plague.

    'nuff said.

Sounds like we both have the same opinion on this Galwaytt. I'm going to try and get rid of it as soon as I can find something more suitable. I have 3 small kids and while it is ideal for the space it's a nightmare on long journeys as the kids start fighting and a 7 seater would seperate them just need to find a good 7 reliable one. any suggestions.

I'd get a Mitsubishi Grandis 2.0 DI-D if I were you. great machine and well priced.

Sorry Marie, I think you're taking me up wrong. I would have no problem with a petrol Mazda at all - it's the diesel ones that are rubbish. I have a 1990 petrol Mazda in the garage and it's been the epitome or reliability. I can't see anything else being any more reliable tbh........

I have come to the conclusion that I'd put up with the modest extra fuel consumption in a petrol over the extra costs and hassle of running a diesel. Unless you're doing 30k+ a year, they're not worth it imho.

As for the 7 seater thing.......mmmmm I have 2 small ones, and I think selling the car, instead of modifying the screamin'............is tackling the symptom, and not the problem ! And believe me, my 2 are well used to testing me too !

thanks colm will have a look at that.

Galwaytt you've lost me. You like the Mazda but you don't like the diesel one I get. Mine drinks juice big time and I'm broke from it. Am I right in saying you don't like the 7 seater.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 73,520 ✭✭✭✭colm_mcm

the Mazda 2.0 engine is junk, it is known to be really unreliable. that's why galwaytt doesn't like his!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 31 MarieMc

Mine is a 1.8 petrol 01 and rattles like the old sytle Nissan Micra.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 12,822 ✭✭✭✭galwaytt

I love the 7 seater, but I was treating it more as a big car with a big boot, not actually using it as a 7-seater. For that reason, and removing the rearmost seats, it's huge.

What I'm saying is, a diesel isn't necessarily cheaper to run. They are much more expensive to buy, and generally (unless you're buying a very recent one) have bigger engines, and so cost more to tax and insure. They also require more frequent servicing, generally, and servicing is more expensive. And, they are also not as light as you think on juice. Mine would do 36-38mpg. And don't forget that diesel is 10c/litre more to buy, as well.

It could very well work out that a diesel would use less juice, but the other factors would more than cancel out any fuel savings.........so what'd be the point?

So, help us to help you out, here:
How much are you spending on juice?
What sort of mpg is it doing, that has you so 'robbed' ?
How many miles p.a. are you doing ?

P.S. don't worry about the rattle - if you buy a diesel, it'sll be second nature to you !

Diesel is 12c cheaper per litre pretty much everywhere I see.

    10,000 miles/16,000 kms p.a. -

    Diesel 7-seater, at 38mpg - Eur 1408.00 in fuel
    Petrol 7-seater, at 30mpg - Eur 1589.00 in fuel

    Diesel 2 litre tax = 614
    Petro 1.8 litre tax = 582

So, a diesel would save you...Eur 149/year. (some of which you'll give to your insurers).......

    Extra servicing, too, don't forget.......

You're going to lose a lot more than Eur 149 if you have to sell yours, and buy any good diesel. Thinks 1000's.........

    Moral: Simply not worth it.

It cost's 30-40 per week. I drive average 6 miles per day. Longest drive in a week would be 13 miles to local town and back.

So Galwaytt you seem to know your stuff about cars. What would you recommend. I'm not a lover of the Estate car. no offence intended to anyone who drives one. i had a 98 Toyota Avensis what a beauty but with 3 kids in the back and trying to get belts on was the only fault I had with the car.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 12,822 ✭✭✭✭galwaytt

Marie, with all due respect - Eur 30 pw is a bargain. I'll wager the vast majority of people spend a lot more........and on a car that size, you're getting good value.

Now, about your mileage, there's no way your only doing 48 miles a week !! My best personal guess is......you're doing......225 miles a week.

Hmmmm will clock it from tomorrow. It's just under half at the mo. Right now I'm pure crap at trying to figure this out "Typical Woman" The outside of the clock is Kilometres inside is miles so the figure on the clock is 95000 is this miles or K. Sorry but I'm useless. So if it is K how do I calculate miles then.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 73,520 ✭✭✭✭colm_mcm

the only reliable method is to top the tank right up, reset the trip meter. drive a certain distance, then top up again. the amount topped up the 2nd time is the fuel used.

Usually the clocks will have miles in big writing and the kms in smaller writing. in this case the odometer would usually be in miles.

1km is roughly 60% of a mile. multpily miles by 6, then knock a zero off the end to get km :)

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 31 MarieMc

Sorry I've made a mistake there. The Miles per hour are on the outside.:eek:

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 12,822 ✭✭✭✭galwaytt

....like a lot on here........I spend too much time in/around/talking cars........:D

...but, what I like is irrelevant, really, my 'collection' is........well, eclectic, to say the least. My kids have to fit into what I like to drive, end of.

Is the real issue the 'rattle' ? If so, why not just fix it ?

If it's something else, like you just don't like the car - for whatever reason - just know two things: 1. cars are more alike than you think, and, 2. have a budget, and stick to it.

The vast majority of 7-seaters are terrible in the 3rd row of seats, and some kids are inclined to get car sick back there. And, as your kids grow.......they'll outgrow the seats.....and you're back to square one.......:o

Oh, and Mrs Galwaytt has just pointed out another minus of 7-seaters: the rear row has two seats. What'll happen is the kids will start screaming over which two get to go in them........!! I'd forgotten our two did the same !

I currently have an estate, and it's brilliant, but I'm selling it. (or trying to, at any rate......:( ) and I'm going back to a petrol, automatic, 2.0 or bigger. The juice is, in fact, the least of the issues of running a car.

most Premacy suspension rattles are caused by worn droplinks

OMG, OMG Colm - you'll wreck the lady's head !! Marie, fill it up, reset the trip to zero, drive it for either a few days - or the week, preferably - and refill it. Tell us then how many miles/kms you did, and how much just it took to refill it. Let the "Men" do the work ;):D:D

OMG OMG OMG I found out why you're using too much juice - actually Mrs Galwaytt spotted it :p - you're driving it at km speeds on an mph clock ! So, when you think you're going 100kph, you're actually doing 100mph !!! That's your problem ! ! :D:D:D

Oh, and Mrs Galwaytt spends Eur 55-60 pw driving my old 3.0 50kms a day.

Some very good points there. Would love an ordinary car but the space in the back is a big issue. Will get the rattle fixed again. It's only just passed NCT so it can't be a major job.

    Best idea so far!

But, I do think you'd benefit from doing the fill-up and clock it routine - if nothing else it'll open your eyes to how much driving you really do, and maybe you'll save money by driving 'smarter'. I'm dying to find out how much you do !

Look at this way: I'm 2 miles from school. So, you'd think we do low mileage. Not a bit. 2 miles up the road in the a.m. 2 miles back. 2 up at 2pm for the 6 yr old, 2 more, back. 2 more at 3.30 for the 9 yr old, another 2 back. That's 12 miles. That's 3 times more than common sense would 'suggest'. And I haven't included to/from work, either. Mileage is like old-age........it creeps up on you !:)

your routines sounds very like mine was last year. But this year I have the school bus so only 1 collecion at 2pm & the local shop is on the way. No work run as I was let go so this year i should save on the fuel. I'll fill it tomorrow (take your advise) reset the clock and check in in a few days time and give you an update. I know the back droplinks were done a few weeks back the the back rattle stopped. Then just after NCT front started so new droplinks will be got for the front.

oh yeah, right ! That's what Mrs Galwaytt says ! And she's got penalty points to prove it ! Not many SO's can claim they drive faster, more often than their Mr ! ....which is why I make her pay for the petrol :)

And, she once commented on my TT......'it overtakes very easy, doesn't it ?' or, 'is that kms or mph on the speedo?....er, mph, why?....oh, nuthin'....just it said 100 today.......', or, ' what's that beeping noise from the dash and the letters SW on the display?'...'er, that's the Speed Warning, dear.....'

Bought new in Jan '08, I reckon it's been depreciating at €34 per day every day since. Fuel, servicing, tyres, tax, insurance, none of the other costs come close to depreciation.

Hi all well it's been a week since I posted and reset the clock - Now at 139.4 and still half full. I've learned it's best to fill it and you get more value for your money. I still have half tank of petrol So I reckon I only used the 35 I put in last fri if not even less.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 12,822 ✭✭✭✭galwaytt

....you don't need to empty it to know what it's using, btw.......if you refill now, the amount it takes is what it took to cover the mileage on the tripmeter. As true for a full, or half, tank.
