I am looking for a rough ballpark on the cost of a service on an 04 BMW 316i.

I was thinking of having a go at it myself but only if there was a decent saving.

DIY I reckon. Oil and filter is easy, plugs are easy, air filter is easy. Fuel filter is do able. Check CV boots to ensure they are not torn, check all fluids are to correct level. She may be due a coolant change, again not difficult. You'll save over €200 in labour and your obviously tempted anyway so you'll probably enjoy it.
