I have a choice of buying a 2007 Opel Astra Life 2007 for 9400 euro or an unregistered 2009 Mazda 3 Touring for 15500 euro.
I dont drive that much about 9000 miles per annum.
    Iwould appreciate any comments, thanks.

which one do you prefer to drive?
Have you the cash available to go for the more expensive one?

Is the Mazda an ex-rental car? What mileage is on it?

It depends, do you really care about handling etc? If not, buy the Astra, it's a good car. Big disparity in price there, are you torn between them or are you looking for an '09 reg or something? And that sounds awfully cheap for an '09 Mazda 3...

Its sounds like you're not that bothered/interested in a particular car and logic would suggest that depreciation will be much lower on the cheaper car. so for financial reasons the cheaper car will cost you a lot less over the lenght of time you own it. Depreciation curve is much steeper on new cars.
Its not that long til 2010 either and a new 09 car will look dated very soon . If you're buying new go for something you REALLY like.

The Mazda is not ex rental, and is new. I suppose i am asking which is the better value for money option, the fact that ther is anew Mazdz 3 coming out next year seems to be a factor.

I have never seen an unregistered rental car, I would reckon that to be illegal really.

To the OP, I would get the Astra as it's nearly 6K cheaper, that's a good lash of cash in these times.

How long will you keep it ?

If, say, 5yrs or more, buy the Mazda.

If shorter term, the Opel will be more saleable, sooner (due to it being cheaper). Annual depreciation on both not a mile apart, tbh.......

I suppose it really depends on how long the OP plans on keeping the car.

The Astra is going on 3 years old so depreciation on it will probably have already peaked. Downside is that the Opel warranty is probabably up on it so any dealer warranty most likely will be short and limited. Probably a wiser buy though if the OP plans to keep the car only for a couple of years.

The Mazda on the other hand comes with a 3 year full warranty and brand new. Downside is that due to a new model depreciation will intially be steep. But iff the OP plans to keep the car for 5 years or more then depreciation balances itself out better over that time and the long warranty peace of mind.

OP, to try and help, I purchased my car 2 years ago for around 23k, I have looked at trading it in recently and I am only getting offered between 6 - 10k for it. If you intend on keeping the car for a few years, which in the current climate yuor would be better off, Take your time and look at other cars. If you rush into buying a car now, you may get something your not happy with and want to get rid off quickely, which will mean taking a large hit on the trade in. If your not arsed about what you drive and plan to keep for a few years, I would go for the astra and save the difference.

May I ask why you've narrowed your search down to these 2 particular cars?

On the Mazda, I drove one (1.4)for a few weeks through work this year and found the following:

    Handling was very good
Engine wasn't particularly powerful, but miles ahead of a 1.4 Focus.
    Engine very quiet at 120kmph
    Seats pretty good
Dash plastics look good, but don't feel that nice
They're said to be very reliable.

Bear in mind the road tax is €430.

    PM sent about alternative

The reason i have narrowed it down to the Mazda 3 is because i think its a very good price, please correct me if i am wrong and the Astra because it looks like a ladys car, Thank you for your opinion on how you found the Mazda 3 to drive,

Mazda 3 all the way, much nicer to drive and the three year waranty would swing it for me.
