Triple glazing on the north side of a house.

I've seen a few posts which mention that in Ireland the best use of triple glazing in on the north side of a house and the that double glazing should be used else where.

The rationale behind this does make sense but to satisfy my curiosity can anyone direct me to a site or some documentation which can demonstrate the science or engineering behind this.
