The boxes sold in shops both bricks and morter and online are nonsubsidised and the boxes from sky at €24 come with a direct debit phone sky and ask them to sell you a box without a a monthly bill and it becomes more expesive than €24

I am completely useless on this topic, but yet I don't get it.
Some online shops do sell a Sky Digibox HD+ @ around 500eur, which you wont be able to use without a Sky subscription...unless to view some FTA channels.

Where is the point in spending 500eur when you get the same box from Sky for 49eur (one off-payment) ?

Then subscription to Sky channels is required anyway and it costs the same regardless if you bought the Digibox over the net or with them.
    Am I missing something ?

A lot of these boxes are not for the Irish market. Irish or british people living in parts of Europe can not ring sky for an install. so they buy non subsidised boxes and source the cards thru Family or friends addresses back home. Before Sky became widely available in 1999-2000. the cost to get it then was between £400 to £500. I know it sounds silly now when sky are offering this for €24 -€49 but either way sky are still going to make back the cost of the box from the customer.
