Can I have some opinions on this car. Looking at about 60 miles per day for work. It will be a long term buy as Im not a petrolhead so probably wont be changing for a few years. Is the price realistic or should I be looking to know something off it? All help appreciated.

get a 1.8 diesel. that's too dear for a petrol IMO. you could get a 09 Avensis petrol for that price

What would people think is a reasonable price for the 08 Mondeo. I know Carzone has prices ranging from 25,000 to 16,000 for Mondeos but can you trust Carzone prices.

Those are Titanium X alloys - bit of strange addition to what would otherwise be the most basic model you can get. +1 to the diesel. BTW the ad hasn't been updated in 8 months!

    lower is generally better!

bear in mind, certain models will be more desirable than others.

A 1.6 MN reg estate isn't that desirable, probably why it's priced at 15950. Up the scale a bit you'll see ex rental 1.6 LX models for €16950. higher specced Zetec models go for a little more.
Diesel LX models start at around 19k and like the petrol models, Zetec models go for more.

Depends on what you want really. If you're keeping it for a few years, the savings made by buying a petrol model will be offset by higher tax and fuel costs.

    I have an 07 diesel mondeo 1.8zetec

zetec is 125bhp and LX is 100bhp in 1.8. Slow off the blocks but once you get to 2nd and 3rd its great. 95000km and absolutly no problems. Zetec gets auto air con, alloys and some dealers throw in bluetooth also. Tax is 156 on 08.

Buddy in Cork picked up a new LX with alloys, front fogs (neither on LX) and bluetooth for 23000 cash. Zetec normally hit 25000 cash only new when he was buying. So for an 08 I would take a conservitive 4000 off each of those figures. He priced all over the country and the most aggressive sellers trying to get a sale (throwing in everything) were the Cork dealers

Thanks lads. So the general consensus is diesel over petrol and 1.8 over 1.6. Wasnt planning on going over a 1.6. Any opinions on the 1.6. Is it really sluggish.

1.6 petrol struggles. It is a heavy car. Why not over 1.6. If you are buying 08 onwards then tax rules changed for emmisions. 1.8 diesel more economical also with more torque which makes a huge differnce when overtaking compared to 1.6. Insurance should'nt be much different at all.

I test drove a 1.6 petrol and hated it when it came out. Diesel gives the impression of power vs petrol with torque. Correct use of gearing in petrol would negate that extra feeling of boost from the diesel but fuel ecomony would always suffer against the diesel.

Am I making sence or has the bottle of wine kicked in ?

The new shape Mondeo is too heavy for the 1.6 litre engine. We only get the detuned 1.6 litre with 110bhp, in the UK it is around 122bhp. LX spec is also pretty basic and that 08 is very expensive.

Here is a nice 07 Econetic 1.8 TDCi with nice spec including half leather interior, etc for alot less money.

You will get great economy from that car that would effectively outway the fact that the motor tax is engine size based on it rather than Co2 from 2008 onwards.

Thanks for the help. Have made my mind up about the 1.6 anyway. Will have a better look at the 1.8 diesels.

just seen a 09 (new) 1.8 TDCI LK for under 23K in a paper today so that price has to be wrong.

Good advice here. The diesel Zetec model is the best option. Stretch to an 08 if you can, as it'll have reduced road tax.

That's a 6 speed so non-ECOnetic version. Think that comes in at 20% VRT rather than 16% for the ECOnetic (5sp) version.
