Performa Hard Disk

    Hi,

I want to transfer the contents of the Hard Disk of my Performa 5260 to a newer Mac. The performa is quite old and predates USB. I bought a drive enclosure on ebay - http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=250488037454&ssPageName=STRK:MEWNX:IT and put the performa disk in it. Both Mac OS X 10.3 and 10.6 can't read it and offer to initialise it. Disk Utility can't see the partition map, though can recognise the hard disk as being 800 Mb or so.

I've tried it in Windows and Linux. Windows recognises the drive and reports that the disk is ready for use but it doesn't show up in the Windows Explorer. Linux ignores it.

    Any thoughts?

I can't try it back in the performa as I don't currently have access to it, so I can't check whether the disk has become damaged, but it certainly worked in the performa itself a few weeks ago.

What OS was on the Performa? 7 or 8?

I would suggest that you need to get your hands on an OS 9 machine (or at least an early OS X machine like a G3 (blue/white) or G4 (grey/clear) tower with OS X and Classic support and try reading it on that.

If you don't have access, then you should bring it/send it to a mac service agent who will have access to older OS.
