Hi Guys, Got my shooting trip to south dakota booked for November. I've been before but I was using a hired gun out there. This time I want to bring my 20-bore, anyone have any experience in this or know what procedures I'll have to follow???

I have no experience in this but I would be very interested in how you organized the trip?
Where do you've to fly from/to etc?

Just get a written invite/confirmation from the guide or person inviting you over to shoot to confirm this, this includes competitive shooting as well, and proably, this is the new thing, a State hunting permit for the State you intend to shoot in.This can be usually be done online and costs [$5 for Alaska]Check that with the giude, but apart from that, you are good to go...:)

I'm not so sure of that. The INS already is tough, but arriving with a gun is &%@? A State license is not new, it has been a requirement for years.

I think it would be a nightmare. Even crossing state lines with a gun is fraught with difficulty as state laws on carriage of guns are different. On top of that, most of the officials you will meet will have no idea of the procedure, and will kick to touch or even hold onto your gun until they get the OK from on high. If one of the baggage handlers at any airport is anti-gun, they take great pleasure in dropping guncases from the greatest height possible.

When I lived there (legally), even pre 9/11, even as a property owner, I could not own a firearm as I was classed as an alien.
You certainly will need a temporary importation cert (See the last pages on the form for info http://www.atf.gov/forms/pdfs/f53303d.pdf) and I'm told that the process takes at least 6 weeks.

Personally, I would not dream of it, I would rent one out there, relaxed and able to look forward to shooting rather than worrying about my gun at all times. Hate to see someone lose a gun.
