I've been doing a little bitta research, looking for a decent bass for little or no money. I know, normally "when you buy cheap, you buy twice" but sometimes there are exceptions.

I came across a bass similar to the one above last summer while gigging. Some bassist said his dad went to America and picked it up for less than $200 new. I had a little mess around with it and it played really well, imho better than a Fender Mexican Deluxe Jazz and the stock pups were pretty nice (though most people would probably change them anyway). I've been messing around with a bog standard SX jazz bass from their beginner series and with a bit of a set up it plays really well, So i'm very tempted to invest some money into their custom/viogate series. I've done my research and I can get one of these custom/vintage ones shipped over in a hard case from America with Irish vat for less than e250. There are a fair amount of reviews for this bass on the internet saying how they're an untapped goldmine for Bassists and give the Fender jazz a run for its money.

I'm curious if anyone on Boards has one of these basses or one similar to the one above (post pics) and let me know what ya think.

Waltons sell them. Don't bother importing, it's not worth it.

In terms of quality, they can be hit or miss. Try one before you buy it. A few cheap mods and a good setup can make it a much better bass. :)

slightly cheaper to import one but at least if i go to waltons i can play it i guess. The set up and slight mods are a small price to pay to a bass that can rival a fender

Picked up a SX Jazz bass on Adverts with a Cube 30 for a little over €200 from memory and very happy with it without changing the stock pups. Was looking for a bass to mess around with for home recording as concentrate on guitar. Heavy enough if standing for a while with it but par for the course with basses I reckon

Definitely worth a punt me reckons

Ive found they just need a setup. You can buy them from www.rondomusic.com.

I think there worth the money bu i dont agree with talkbass when they say their better then MIA fenders or the like. The decent bass's though and great things to mod.

Yeah I've been looking on rondo they ship to ireland aswell and i've calculated even with irish vat it'll cost less than 250 for a bass, hadcase, and delivery.
Not as good as MIA Fender, but the MIM hellz yeh

I realized i posted this up on a two year old thread LOL So here it is again in my own sx one

sx = win! No better rival to a fender imho!

I got mine imported from Rondo (Absolutely brilliant people with great customer support) And yes the shipping was expensive! BUT I got it delivered straight to my door in 7 days, ANNNNND It was cheaper than in waltons! INCLUDING shipping and a case (cases are required for international shipping) and replacement scratchplate it cost under 235 euro!
There is a chance you would get stopped Irish vat on the bass, but even if you do it still works out really cheap. (less than 250)
I'm playing bass for about 6 years and this is now my main gigging bass, as its so great! Stock pups are GREAT! Smooth mapel neck and sweet looking black block inlays! Its been said before they can be hit and miss, but even if you get a not so great one they can be set up to be as good as the good'uns very easliy!
My brother warned my "when you buy cheap, you buy twice"
I agree fully with him on this because I'm DEFINATELY going to buy another SX bass from rondo!
If there are any hesitant people who want to play one before making the investment, I invite you to play mine in Kildare!
(the colour I wanted wasn't available but ah well, its WELL worth it)

Here's my baby Fully stock :

So would you reccommend getting one if you wanted to mess around on bass but your main instrument is guitar? Cos I've been thinking of getting a 5 string bass for ages I think their class. SX do 5 strings right?

Do buy an sx! The only bad thing is they've changed the headstock on the new modles.i don;t particulary like em, Though on http://www.rondomusic.com they have some of the models with the old headstock. Yeah SX do fretless and 5 string, and 5 string fretless and they come in P and J styles. Using Rondo was easy, and my bass arrived safely and within a week!
It would be a great instrument for a guitarist wanting to start bass. They're brilliant instruments, as i said I use it as my main bass and its not gonna break the bank. Great for recording! Fits in on stage! :D:D
