To fill the tank or not?

Sorry if this has been asked before...

I was reading a guide on how to save money on fuel/motoring and one of the points was to fill your fuel tank in one go as opposed to say quarter fills each time.
Point was made that its better to fill once, rather than stop/start a few times.

    Would it make much difference?

If I fill the tank on my passat that will be 65/70 litres, not far off the weight of an extra adult being carried around.

(And yes it is a slow day at work:))

Fill it at night when it gets colder outside.

    The difference would be minute.

They also say that if you park front ways into spaces, it will use up more petrol as you need to reverse out of your space (which uses more petrol). Even more so if the engine is cold (mornings/end of work).

Brim it. Putting in €10-€20 here and there is just a pain in the arse.

Thats a new one, but you'll have to reverse in or out either way!

True, but when the engine is warm, it wont use up as much petrol

but if you reverse it in when you arrive at the space, the engine is warm and it costs less apparantly compared to reversing out when starting cold the next morning

but the main reason for me is the sheer annoyance of constantly calling at stations to put in a tenner, fill 'er up for me all the way

All those tips and tricks give absolute bare minimal returns, the single most cost effective change you can make is to change your driving style.

Anticipating the traffic head and driving accordingly alone will make much more of a difference to your consumption than any other suggestion.

Riskymove is right, the saving is minute, but constantly filling up is a pain in the arse.

Me too, just saw the article on the RTE website and thought it was a bit of strange logic.

Another big saver is putting on a slightly narrower tire, go from a 225 to a 205, will save significantly!

Used to work for an oilfield services company where everyone had to reverse park. Company policy, the logic being that if we had to leave in a hurry, it's quicker to drive out than reverse out. Still do it, just in case... :D

    - Check tyre pressure,
    - drive as though you've an egg between your right foot and the throttle,
    - come off the accelerator to slow down (instead of braking at the last minute)

On the fill, I usually brim the tank each time then drain it, and check the trip meter to get an idea of the mpg.

Obviously not, as I have never heard of 'hypermiling' before:o
