I am in the market for a new TV. I would like to be in a position to receive analogue and digital terrestrial signals. Power City have a fair number of their TVs labelled as suitable for Irish digital TV. I spoke to a salesman this week who confirmed that these TVs have MPEG4 tuners. Is it correct that many sets on sale are capable of receiving these broadcasts without a set top box?

Yes most of the new ones are now but always check the specifications first and see that it has an mpeg4 tuner before buying as the likes of harvey normans and currys etc are still flooded with UK spec mpeg 2 only telly's [with a confusing freeview sticker on them].
Some of those might have mpeg4 [irish standard] and some won't.
An mpeg4 capable telly will also receive mpeg 2 channels but an mpeg 2 only receiver will only decode sound on mpeg4 signals so no good.
Also always read the instructions as digital set up is a bit more technical than analogue ever was.
Also keep an eye on the various threads here that talk about the current RTE mpeg 4 tests and the welsh digital switch over thread if you are in the south east.

The smaller models are mainly mpeg2 still by the way, thats 26" and smaller.
Theres a sticky on this forum with model numbers confirmed with mpeg 4 so maybe ask there or look there.

You might also want to have a look at this commercial forum on boards.
IME they are very good at pointing out what has and has not an mpeg 4 tuner.
They are the phillips store on the corner of georges st and Dame st in Dublin.

There is a "sticky thread" in this forum that lists MPEG4 Tvs suitable for Irish DTT.

I notice that you mention that it should have analogue capabilities too - be aware that some of the UK TVs whilst being MPEG4 and capable of picking up Irish DTT will only have a UHF tuner for analogue. Some parts of the country still use the VHF band for some of the analogue services.

There are some bargains to be had at present particularly the combo tvs that do Freesat HD and DTT - LG LF7700 range - and UHF analogue.
