    Hi

just looking for some advice about the right frame size for the defy 3.

I'm 5'7'' 30" leg, so according to wiggles sizeing I'm sorta in between a 52 & 54, so I measured my arm span & I've got a positive "ape index", which according to them means I should go for the bigger size. Is wiggles sizing fairly accurate or is it more what your comfortable with yourself?

Also on the defy site they don't seem to list the frame sizes in the standard 52 54 56 measurements(that I can see at least). Would I fall in their S or M? So I'm kinda confused.

Any help or guidance would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

I have found Wiggle's sizing to be pretty accurate. I am a different size to you but ride a 58cm in Trek/Specialized/Focus/Van Nicholas/Litespeed and am an L in Giant. I am between a 56 and a 58 in the former bikes but have always gone for the bigger one. With the Defy measurement "D", effective top tube, is the important one as it will define the reach. Seat tube length ("A") in Giant is meaningless compared to other manufacturers as they are extremely compact frames.

Not sure if this helps...similar size, and same manufacturer.

    I'm 5'7" with a 29" leg and I got a Giant Terrago MTB in a Small Frame Size (16")

As a road bike it feels a little on the small side - but offroad it feels perfect.
(obviously you won't be offroad on yours...)

You probably need to ride both to be 100% sure.

    Hi all,

    thanks alot for the replies.

ah ok, that makes sense. Is there a relationship between the "D" measurement & the length of a persons torso or arm span. As in if you have an arm of span of x the bikes "D" effective top tube should be y?
I found this size chart a while ago, dunno how accurate it is.
Thanks for this, it seems to point towards the smaller of the two for my height.
You probably need to ride both to be 100% sure.
Ya I guess to know for sure this is the only realy solution. thanks again for all the advice.

I've the exact same measurments as yourself and I've a Giant SCR C3, which I assume has the same geometry. The first time I went to cyclesuperstore I was told I'd need the small but when I was put up on the bike I was told medium. I went for the medium in the end and it's fine. For a while I thought it might have been the wrong size but I think I was just getting used to the geometry of a racing bike (even though it's the relaxed frame). When I was in cyclesuperstore I looked at one of the Lapierres and it did seem to be a better fit but when I found my bike on wiggle it was nearly half the price as in Ireland, so I went for that, there was a sale on. If I bought in Ireland I might have gone for the Lapierre.

When I got the bike I changed the stem to a shorter one (90mm I think).

Have a look at different makes and try them out for size first.

The next time I buy a road bike I'm not sure if I'll go for a Giant as I think I'm in between the Small & Medium. Some other makes offer alot more in sizing options.

Just to add to the confusion, I'm 5'10 (and a half) and I ride a medium SCR. Wobbits is 5'8 and rides a medium TCR.

I couldn't ride a TCR medium as the reach is too long for me despite being taller.

Don't take that chart I posted as gospel, take a small and a medium for a test ride. Defy's are fairly common so you might even know someone who has one you can take for an extended spin.
