I have two units (nuvi and edge 705) and I want to buy maps for the USA.
Does anyone know if I just have to pay once and can use the maps on both units?

I'm about to go find out myself anyway on the garmin site, but if anyone has had success with this before, let me know?

    thx

    P

There are means and ways to do this none legal.

No there is a perfectly legal way to do it which is to buy the maps on a SD card, you can then transfer them between the two units but can only use them on one at a time.

If you buy the DVD you can only unlock to one device but you can also use the maps on a computer which is very handy.

depending on where you are in the world(it looks pretty good in the states) you can use maps from http://www.openstreetmap.org/ free...and in some places better than the garmin maps(in germany they have a silly amount of detail on the OSM maps)

Doesn't the SD card have an unlocking step still? The files used to be encrypted to stop you just copying everything to another SD card.

As far as I am aware the SD card is copy protected but can still be moved between devices- recall that SD stands for Secure Digital and actually has a built in DRM scheme although this is rarely used.

There is a way to remove the security on the card it mainly mean removing the cards identity number and then you can have it on two cards.

But tell you how to do this is wrong lol

Sure, but I am just saying that legally you can get one map and use it in multiple Garmin devices (although not on a PC, which would be pretty essential for me.)
