Just wondering, is it possible to stop a song playing on the iPhone? The only option appears to be to pause the song, but it will resume when ipod function is resumed. Have checked the manual but no luck. Is it an iPod/iPhone thing?

Pressing the pause button works the same as stop really. The song does not resume when the iPod app is resumed unless you tell it to. Also try double pressing the home buttom, you can have a mini-player pop up then.

From my experience of ipods and ipod touch, you cant stop a song as such, only pause it. Not sure about on an iphone though when its primary objective is to be a phone, rather than a music player, like an ipod

What are you trying to do exactly.
If I wanted to stop a song, i'd press pause.
If i was doing it to turn off music, i'd then close the player,
if I was doing it to play a different song, i'd select another song

Most MP3 players these days have a pause function only. When you think about it, you're playing a digital file - pausing and stopping are the same thing, you stop playback completely.

A lot of people think there should be a separate stop button but that's a remnant from the cassette and CD days, where pause would stop playback but keep the hardware ready to resume whereas stop would completely stop playback and the hardware. On a digital player, stop makes no sense at all.

Always found this a bit weird.... but obviously there is no need for it. iTunes on the desktop works the same way...again, always bothered me for no real reason.

What they really need is a new symbol for digital players, so us old timers can get over the lack of a stop button.

    It's called the play/pause button.

You, sir, are lacking in imagination.

Do we really need to think up a new symbol for a button when we already have one?

We need it more than life itself.

I suggest you get some tip-x and make a perfectly formed square surrounding the pause button. Problem solved.
