Hi all, am a learner driver and was reversing out of my parking place and hit another empty car on the street. No damage to my car but dent in the bumper of the other car a 1996/97 VW Golf, contacted owner and he will get back to me re repair in a few days. Felt awful when it happened and haven't been out driving since.:( Does anyone know approx how much the repair of a bumper would cost? Here is a pic attached,
Also anyone recommend any good places near city centre for repairs?
    Thanks

Did you damage the bumper only on that Polo or the apron (below it) as well. Since its an old car a decent back street carcraft type job would suffice. It depends how willing the owner is to shop around.

That's a VW Polo rather than a Golf.

Those Polos have a very small bumper, looks like the chin of the bodywork below the bumper got a bang too.

Unfortunately it doesn't matter what price you or I put on repairing, it really depends on where the owner gets the job done. I'd doubt the owner will be getting it done at a main dealership due to the age of the car so they will probably get it done at a local body shop. Really depends on whether the owner wants a perfect job done or just a fixer uper.

Feck the damage and drive her on - as an L driver you'll probably have a nice collection all over the car soon.

The car looks like a VW Polo rather than a Golf, as far as I know the rear damage there is in two parts, the top main bumper and the metal piece underneath, both are purchased seperately. I don't think the main rear bumper can be repaired easily as it contains foam and would be unlikely that it could be remoulded back to shape, it is though possible that the bottom piece as it's metal could be repaired. However with the age of this car and current worth of it approximately €1000-€1250 purchasing new parts for it makes little sense. Ideal solution would be to go to a scraps yard and try to pick up the same parts, ideally if you can get a blue VW Polo little work will need to be done to replace.

Not his or her own car.

    Lol, I remember a friend of mine telling me a friend of his hit into a car in a car park. Loads of people were watching so he wrote a note, let it under the wiper and drove off. The note read;

"Hiya. I'm after crashing into your car and I'm sorry. The only reason I'm writing a note is because everyone is watching me."

OP, a new bumper shouldn't cost a whole lot, either sourced from a scrap yard or bought new and painted. I wouldn't be surprised if you didn't damage the lower bit, as I've yet to see a 6n Polo yet without that bit dented.

I'd ask him/her will he take a few euro's to live with it. Not really worth fixing it imo.

May not be to you, but that could very easily be someone's pride and joy.

Just a suggestion. Sometimes people don't ask if the owner can live with it for a few bob.
The owner may be more than happy to leave it and not to fix it or indeed he may want it repaired perfectly. The op should ask thou and may save a few bob in the meantime.

My bumper (plastic) was hit and it looked perfect, apart from a small scrath and some cracking in the paint. However, under the mat in the boot the panel had crumpled up.

A picture like that may not tell the full story.

Not if it happened to you're car but!

No, no. But something very similar happened the father, except no note was left and it cost him about 1500 euro, so I know how it feels. I just think you are missing the humour in it.

Thanks for the replies everyone, btw I was with a fully licensed driver but was so near the car, clutch came up too quick and car jumped, got a fright...no amount of shouting stop would have stopped that but I have learnt my lesson! ....the owner is bringing his car to a mechanic friend and then getting back to me, don't know whether I did the damage on the lower part of the car as well as it was dark!

The owner did say that he is afraid that it won't pass an upcoming NCT as it has ruined break pads anyhow so hopefully offering a few quid will be okay. Bit broke at the mo' and seeing the prices quoted above fears he would like it completely repaired!

As for calling into the owner, couldn't leave it, karma n' all though some friends thought I was mad to do that! Will keep you posted, hope it won't cost too much and that I can be brave enough to get out driving again!

That one thing I would attend to first. Get out there straight away and get driving again. Everyone has there tips, as you say learn from your mistakes and move on, don't leave it dent your confidence!

Here's hoping it shouldn't cost too much.

Hi all, just to keeps you's updated. Spoke to owner and looks like he wants it back the way it was, rather than an offer of some €. Just a question would a dent in the bumper affect the NCT? I am guessing not, but he says there is some diffculty opening and closing the car boot...could that affect the NCT? Thinking that this may cost alot now, and feel bad. Have to wait another while now re mechanic...I am guessing it is totally up to the owner who fixes the car but overall I just want this finished with. Freaks me out parking near that car which I have to do...been out twice since and my friend's were shocked as to how nervous I am now. Got to get my courage back!
