Garages usually give crap money for them anyway, but if you shop around some garages are willing to give fairly good trade ins. It also depends on what type of car you have and how old it is.

It also depends what you are trading the old car in against. There seems to be a low supply of good tidy 05/06/07 family cars on dealer forecourts at the moment.

Be prepared to shop around for the best prices and focus on the cost to change price rather than the trade-in price of your old car.

If you have a realistic idea of what your cars value is (with everything taken into consideration), you don't mess about and you are ready to do a deal I can't see any reason why you shouldn't get a fair deal.

Have you're research done, have an idea what it's worth and if you are going to see a car check how competitively priced it is. Ie. If it's the cheapest one in the country, expect your trade in to be valued and aimed for retail at a similar position in the market.

op - bazz is 100% on the money here. Dont get too bogged down with the trade in value of your car or even the window price of the one you are looking at, the only number that ever matters is the "bit in the middle" - "the cost to change"

You must have some idea of what you can spend at the moment so there is your answer

    good luck with the search

Aye, you are hitting some what into a specialst market with that car. Just out of curiousity, say against something like a 09 Mk5 GTi at a discounted retail of 29k, what kinda money would you value yours at trade in wise?

I reckon you could get yourself a good deal against either of these cars.

Dealers still have a good supply of unregistered MkV Golf GTi that they need to shift before the arrival of the MkVI soon. Also the Focus ST is a 2.5 litre petrol car which is not in high demand in this country due to the associated above average running costs. If a dealer has one sitting in his showroom for a while then he could be eager to move it.

A diesel Octavia vRS would not be a hard car for a dealer to sell on either.

Actually on a very off topic note, a 09 D registered MkVI Gti Golf passed me on the way home from Mayo yesterday. I thought I was seeing things.

There are quite a few unregistered ones up on carzone at knockdown cash prices. I'm sure the Focus ST is not running out the showroom door either. I think the new VRT and motor tax system has killed these cars in this country.

I think the OP will negotiate a better deal from a dealer who already has either of these on their forecourt a bit as oppose to ordering one.

Didn't the road tax drop dramatically on '08 registered clean diesels? I've looked at '07 Octavia TDis (road tax over 600) and 08 ones (road tax 156) and know what i'll be going for - same emissions too.

Blame the green party for this piece of genius planning, according to the dealers. Screwed up the used market for 06/07 models nicely.

Lots of 07 regular models clogging the forecourts and only about 2k cheaper than a cheaper to tax 08 model.

Not sure about the 170hp VRs though...

Hearing some horror stories out there. My sister bought a 2006 BMW 316I SE with leather, parking sensors, top spec, lovely car and only a 1.6, got it 5 months old in January 2007for €39k.

She wants to change it for a SUV/ 7 seater. Best price she has been offered is 16k and the car has only got 30k on it with full history.........mental. She still has it.........

I'd say 15-16k is about right, maybe a small bit +/- depending on margins etc, but it's most certainly not worth thousands about that...

Really? Think she will be hanging on for a bit then, huge fall in value though, no?

    Thanks :(

Numerous numerous reasons why that particular car would have dropped in value. Change in vrt, so on so on so on... Also it's just about 4 years old.

i have my car advertised for 16500. which seems reasonable going by carzone.ie. wouldnt take anything less than 14k if i was trading it in though.
i would be looking for around a 07 golf gti or focus st. i would be willing to spend around 6k with my own.

Depends on mileage, but 16k might be a little on the high side.

Have a read of this thread - http://www.boards.ie/vbulletin/showthread.php?t=2055662240

If you'd take €14,000 then yop might be interested?
