Anyone know if there's one around? I'm gonna buy a car and in this (ahem)economical climate i'm planning on saving money with the car i choose.

Was gonna go with something like golf/a3 1.6 petrol but i'm wondering will i save much money compared 1.9 diesel versions of the same cars?

I have that engine in my car. If you drive it on any little bit it drinks petrol. You need to drive it like a nun on valium to get anywhere even approaching the claimed mpg. The 1.9 tdi will give much, much better mpg. See parkers.co.uk for manufacturers mpg figures.

What year are you on about buying anyway/how much are you thinking of spending? That can make a difference to the advice given. How many miles per year will you be driving also?

UK data, but available in L/100km.

Think it's only for new cars so you might not get figures for a Golf 1.9Tdi, but the consumption wouldn't be too dissimilar to the A3 or Octavia with that engine. You might struggle with the 1.6 consumption as that's mainly been replaced by the 1.4T across the whole VAG range, but it looks like it might still be available in the LEON or the Fabia.

    Manufacturer's website should have these.

    Buying new or used?

A second Parkers, its a great site.

I have the 90BHP 1.9 TDi (VE type) Golf Estate from 2000 and I am consistently getting 57 MPG from a mix of winding country roads and long stretches of N roads. I can be both heavy and light on the accelerator and to be honest, its pretty nippy if you keep it in the right rev band and considering the weight of the car, its nothing spectacular but it pulls quite well. The engine that has round the 105 to 115 bhp mark would be the better all rounder though and still would give you the same MPG or there abouts so I hear.

The 1.9 TDi (PD type, they look something like this, with the grey and the black) from about 2002 or 2003, when im not too sure, but the PD's give (subjectively, I havent driven one yet) much better accelleration and performance in general and I believe have similar MPG ratings. They are meant to be more prone to the odd problem when compared to the VE type engines though.
The PD TDI with 115 bhp is again the best alrounder

Still, the 1.9TDI is overall, in what ever guise a very frugal engine as you will be hard pushed to have the MPG drop into the low forties and 60 can be got if you need to hit it, presuming its in a car the size of a Golf and A3.
