Advice on buying a city bike

I'm looking for a good, reliable bike just to get around Dublin. I'll only be travelling around 5-10 miles every day getting to and from work and college.

I don't mind getting a first or second hand bike so long as it fulfills my needs.

    I came across this: http://www.gumtree.ie/dublin/64/44604564.html

Can anyone recommend whether it is good or bad value for what I want.

I'm not sure what is "cool or trendy" about that bike, or indeed what makes it "fleshy", but 300 euro for a steel bike with a hub gear is a bit much and not something I would be looking at.

I had a friend who was looking at all sorts of junk on gumtree. Ancient bikes being sold for too much money and "new" bikes going for what seemed like bargain prices. In the end I convinced him to check out the Specialized Sirrus from worldwidecycles. He bought one, loves it and has now started doing some leisure spins outside of his regular commute.

The best part? It costs 20 euro more than that bike you were looking at: Specialized Sirrus
