Unless buying second hand, only the 8gb 3G iPhone is available to buy...

And for the 3GS only 16gb or 32gb available...

How much music are you going to store on the device, are you going to put movies and pictures on it. Only you can decide if you need 8 or 16 gb. I had an 8gb ipod touch and never got close to filling it. Got the 3gs now 16gb version and i will never fill it. My friend has the 32 gb its nearly full. So it depends on how much you use it.

The 3g has most of the important features of the iphone. If you can live with it been a small bit slower than the 3gs and dont get lost much :) so you wont need a compas you will be fine.

You're only going to regret buying a 3G in my opinion. Why buy the model that has already been improved on? Just save the extra bit of cash and go for the 16GB 3Gs, although a 32GB one is a much better option. When your spending that much money on a phone you have to atleast try and future-proof it.

As a phone for listening to music it is not that great. Nokia MusicXpress beats it hands down.

But for games/apps is where I am taking up most diskspace. 16GB would be fine tbh if it is a case of money.

Ummm, don't really get that Hobbes. My 3G is great for listening to music and i haven't had ANY problems with it as a phone either.
My main issue with the device would be battery life - i get a day and a half out of a full charge, that's with bluetooth always on, wifi always on, in the region of 10 calls, bucketloads of text messages and the usual messing with apps etc that comes with an iPhone.

I'm not sure if future-proofing is really an option on an iPhone, tbh. There isn't that big a step up between the 3G and 3GS and there's probably a whole new version due out next year.

OP, I had a 16GB 3G, and only filled half it - so when I upgraded I got a 16GB 3GS. Only you know how much music/video you're likely to put on it, though I get the impression that as you're asking - you're not the type to go filling it up just for the sake of it.

Because the 'improvements' are fairly meh for a lot of people. While I have the 3Gs myself, I reckon the 3G is still a very worthwhile buy, and it's a genuine decision with the relative prices. From what I can see, and I stand to be corrected, the 3MP camera, Video capabilities a compass and a marginally(?) faster processor are all the extras you get. Nothing there to regret in the long term (considering long-term from a phone point of view is 18 months)

I found fupp all difference between the 3G and 3GS cameras, tbh.
Video is good though as long as it's daytime.

You know the chicks only like double digits, prunch!!!!! And please don't use terms like ovs in here, do you think eveyone speaks like you?!

The 3g should be fine in terms of dating, that's my own uneducated opinion

Well comparing sound to sound on the same headphones the Nokia sounds better as well as has stereo speakers. Better battery life too. But iPhone wins out on apps and ability to play video.

I've a macbook and ipod touch. My plan is to start saving a bit now and then get the newest version of the iPhone 12 months from now. Soon we'll start seeing apps that require the extra processing speed of the 3GS tbh.
