I remember a few years back my 307 failed nct due to worn left balljoint.....so i bought a new balljoint from peugeot and fitted it.
Passed no problem :)...The mad thing about it was the old balljoint i removed
    had no wear/play in it...
Normally a worn balljoint has some bit of wear/play in it ....so at the time i was wondering did it need to be replaced at all...:mad:
    Row.

    Everybody will have these stories.

My car needed a new CAT but just gave it a Lamba sensor and after arguing for around 30 minutes they passed it. Ok, so my mother argued for me but still. :D

I have seen it quite often that you will see a joint 'kicking' while on the shaker plates but will feel no play with the wheel jacked off the ground

I'm going back for the third time this weekend after been told that I needed a new front wishbone which was duly replaced only to be told last Saturday that I need a new front shock absorber.

When I asked the guy who did the 2nd test why I wasn't told that the shocks needed changing, he couldn't give me an answer.

New service, new pads, Scenic. Failed NCT on brakes.

Back to mechanic, shaking of head, washed the car, sent it back in. Passed.

Oh yeah, quality is what it's all about.......

Well the moral of the story here is to wear a blonde wig and a skirt and you've got a better than average chance of passing your NCT.;)

Well that is easily explained. Maybe your pads were not bedded in?

Often if brakes fail the first time and are borderline fail if you do them again immediately they will pass

You would say it to who? The NCT people? Why? Sure if he has the part he should just fit it, why voluntarily fail the test?

    It has already passed!
I would discuss the fact that something they deemed to be roadworthy was previously failed and there is obviously a problem with one of the testers.

If you were failed for something in a re-test that wasn't deemed a failure in the first test then you should really read the legislation as it may be of help...
    11. (1) In carrying out a test on a vehicle, the items to be tested and the methods of testing shall be in accordance with the National Car Test (NCT) Manual 1999, as published by the Stationery Office, in August, 1999.

    (2) In carrying out a re-test—

    (a) the items to be tested shall be those items the condition of which constituted reasons for refusal of the test certificate.

    (b) the methods of testing shall be in accordance with sub-article (1).
    http://www.irishstatutebook.ie/1999/en/si/0395.html

In other words, they shouldn't have failed you on additional items during the re-test!

And there was I thinking that the conspiracy theorists among us were reading far too much into it when they were saying the NCT was only a money making scam by getting people to re-test their cars for the re-test fee.
