How do you use an ipod?

I had an ipod free from the bank 3 years ago but I could never get it to work. I am a total technophobe, I can never get technology to work for me, but I've decided I really need an ipod. Can anyone give me simple step by step instructions on what to do about this?

Should I just buy an ipod off ebay? Does the brand make a difference?

Then where do I download songs from? And how do I then get the songs onto the ipod? Is every song you can think of available to download?

If you have hundreds of songs on your ipod, are they all there in the order you put them on? Do you have to search through them all to find the one you want?

Can you get belts that hold the ipod so that you can go running with it? If so, are the belts usually included?

Apple are the only company that makes iPods.

You either rip the songs from your cd's or you can buy them from itunes.

No,the menu lists all the artists in A-Z and when you click on an artist it brings up all their albums.

    Hey Stormwarrior.

Bearing in mind you're a technophobe...

    1. iPods aren't like usb keys or general drives, you can only transfer songs to/from it using iTunes in a process known as 'syncing'. Can't be done from any other media player like winamp, realplayer, etc. Just iTunes. You click what playlists/individual songs you want on your ipod and click 'sync'. Simple as.

    2. You can only, in theory, sync songs from your computer. You can go to your friends house and sync with their itunes if you want, but it will replace the songs on your ipod, not add to them. Then when you're back home you can sync with your own itunes again but not keep the songs you got from your friend's pc.

    3. Instructions and general feautres relating to the iPod shuffle are here, though I don't know if the model you have has the voice recognition. Not up to speed on the various generations of shuffles myself.

You can use WinAmp to put songs on your iPod.

You don't have to set iTunes to Automatically "sync" your songs. You can do it manually by simply selecting the manual setting on iTunes.

You can also use WinAmp to take songs off your friends PC and anyone else's PC, including your own, but iTunes will not allow you to do this. Unless you download added software that is not endorsed by Apple.
