Choosing Third Year Subjects?

Sorry if this isn't the exact forum for this question but it is linked somewhat so maybe someone can help.

I have to choose two subjects from chemistry, microbiology or botany for third year science.

I find all of them interesting but chemistry is obviously more difficult.

I have no idea which I want to do for fourth year or what I want to do after college.

My question to ye is this - which of the above subjects would be best to do, simply with regard to ease of employment and also money.

    Cheers for advice.

What college are you in? Sounds like NUIG, same as myself.

The obvious thing is not to go with what you're best at, but rather what you'd like the most. If you like it then you'll find it easier and do better anyway.

Both chemistry and micro are fairly generous when it comes to employment but chemistry is easily the better subject to do if you're looking to go into industry.

Well I've no idea how ya figured out I'm in NUIG but spot on your right.

To be honest I'm just thinkin bout my future. After college I want a job and I would like to get get paid enough money that I can actually live a decent life ya know. So many people come out of college with degrees that are tough to get and then get jobs that pay something similar to what ya'd get if ya'd stayed workin in Tesco's after that summer in fifth year, ya know.

I reckon in any case a PhD is the way to go.

Well, for every qualification that you have, employers are required to pay you more anyway, so you've got the right idea. I'm going into third science too and I'm doing straight chemistry, mostly since biochem turned out to be a load of bollox but, also since I do love it so.

Ph.D. I'd definitely go for since employers would jump on PhD graduates. I've heard they even go for postgrad students and finance their PhD in return for so many years working with them after graduating.

My problem is that I know chem and micro are the way to go for a fouth year subject as botany, altough interesting, may have poor options afterwards even with a PhD. But doing chem and micro in 3rd year would be a bitch, chem and bot or micro and bot would be much handier.

Whats the story anyway, we register online in our own time, then register in the college, but next monday do we just find out where all the lectures are on and go in, I missed the start back week last year.

It's register online in your own time, pay the fees, then choose your subjects (all online) then pick up your I.D. in the Reading Room.

If it's handy you're looking for, just go with botany and whatever you think you could do better in between chem and micro.

But if you want to challenge yourself a bit go for chem and micro, but I can't answer this question for you. 9 times out of 10 you already know what you want to do, just lack the courage to put it down on paper. Same story with me this year, but I just asked myself one question. Could I live with myself if I chose wrong? Seemed easy after that.

I suppose ya never really know if ya've chosen right or wrong cause either way whichever one ya did'nt pick you'll never know what it would have been like, but sure I've loads a time to decide anyway ;) Cheers for advice and prob see ya in chem labs.... I think...maybe not....sure I dunno.
