Turnout is reported to be higher than at the same stage in 2004. Initial Results will be released in the next 5 mins. The results will set the tone for the remainder for Federal Election campaign which comes to an end later in the month.

First results coming through from Thurigen: CDU (Merkels party) lose 10%!

Far right NPD take 4.8% not enough to make it into the parliament but a big increase regardless.

    Currently looking like this:

    CDU 31.2% (-12.3)
    Linke 27.7% (+1.1)
    SPD 18.7% (+4.2)
    Green 6.0% (+1.5)
    FPD 8.0% (+4.4)
    NPD 4.4% (+2.8)

A huge defeat for the CDU. The Left Party (ex communists) may well lead a regional government for the first time in German history.

In Saarland: CDU lose 13% while the far left 'Linke' gain 18%

    The latest results:

    CDU 34.5% (-13.0)
    SPD 24.5% (-6.3)
    Linke 21.3% (+19.0)
    Greens 5.9% (+0.3)
    FPD 9.2% (+4.0)
    Others 4.6% (-)

Huge win for Oskar Lafontaine of the Linke (Left) Party. He is a former SPD member and a minister in Gerhard Schroeders party. This is the bet result for the Linke ever in West Germany. Lafontainte is a Saarlander and this result may have more to do with personality than policy.

It is, like Thuringen, a disaster for Merkels CDU. The only consellation is the poor performance of their rivals the SPD.

Saarland could end up with the SPD-Left-Green coalition. This would be the firs time the Left have governed outside of the old East Germany.

Saarland is however the second smallest state in Germany.

In Saxony: Little change, gains for the FDP and the far right lose some seats but reamin above 5% and remain in the parliament.

The Center Left SPD scored just over 10% and came in 4th place!

First reaction nationally - poor results for the Grand Coalition.
