hi,just looking for advice on chosing arts subjects.
can you pick stuff purely on the basis of wanting to give it a go... i wouldnt mind trying to learn spanish.
should you pick it based on what you were good at for Lc.
or pick it related to your course and career plans, working with children..childrens studies.
    :)just wondering thanks

I think there is 2 levels of Spanish in arts.A beginner(for people who haven't studied Spanish before) and then one for people who have studied Spanish before.I'm not doing Spanish but I'm doing economics which I didn't study for the leaving cert.I would think that you would have to put in a bit more work but sure it will be grand if you are interested in it.You can spend a year in Spain also which I'd say would be good craic. The one thing I'd say about studying Spanish is that I have heard that leanguages are very tough in college.I'm doing French so we're in the same boat.

There's Spanish for beginners and then intermediate Spanish (for people who took it for Leaving Cert). I'd say go for it, languages always look good no matter what job you're going for, and Spanish is pretty easy to catch on to (I only took it up during 4th Year and managed to get an A1 at Higher Level - you'll be grand once you're willing to put the work in).

I think in the prospectus they suggest subjects that might be useful for you to take alongside certain subjects (e.g. it recommended that English, Journalism or a foreign language would go well with Creative Writing), if you're looking for ideas.

i did german for lc and hot a HL b1 but am not a fan of it at all, should i keep it on anyway? was thinkin of irish but thats not got a lot to do with psychology and 3 languages will definately confuse me!

Spanis,Irish and German might be difficult enough as they are so different.I did French and Spanish last year and that wasn't bad as they both derive from Latin.Would you think that it would be very useful to be fluent in french and Spanish.Would I be better of doing those 2 instead of sociological and political studies?

If you're not a fan of German I wouldn't pick it up again in university, but then again I'm no expert like I'm only going in to 1st year this year as well :p. It's just if you didn't like the language itself throughout school I'd doubt you'd start liking it all of a sudden?

Poisonated, I picked French and Spanish as well! :)

i'd advise taking one of either Legal Science or Psychology as you never know, you might love it and want it as a career choice, and Soc and Pol is really good with anything.

well with my course, the pure psychology course its not really an arts degree. we just do these for first year along with the core stuff for psychology. i don think i should pick psychology twice..if you get me. this college craic is confusin!

Keep in mind that if you wish to study Psychology or Legal Science you must get into the top 10 students (in order to study denominated Psych/LS only) or into the top 100 to study it with another subject (not too difficult, just study a little!). I think that if you got a B hon. or above in the LC, you should study that language. I have a friend who did Beginners' Italian in first year and, like a lot of other students, found it quite easy to pick up. DO keep in mind what field you MIGHT like to go into after your degree and pick your subjects accordingly. I advise you to avoid Information Technology unless it REALLY interests you (I speak from personal experience.........). Pick soc & pol only if it actually interests you- don't pick it in place of another subject that might interest you more.

(My selection was English, French, Psychology and IT- I knew from the beginning that I wanted to do English and French anyway and fortunately, my mind didn't change.)

hi again. like i said am in the Psychology(denominated) course already so am not tryin to tranfer after a year. I will be doin that module anyway and need others. I see now childrens studies is a connect subject and i can pick it so im pretty short on options!

Anyone understand how the connect programme subjects work?
is irish a silly choice? got an honours A1 in LC but if its not goin to help me prob best not pick it.. right???

I wouldn't recommend it, coming from a third year IT(BA) student
