While I do enjoy mario games muchly, I just think sonic as a character is well cooler (we just wont mention his more recent escapades). I'd pick the bad-ass blue hedgehog that runs around at 500mph over a tubby italian plumber who eats magic mushies any day.

Mario. It's not even close. While the megadrive sonic games are good mario ones are just way better.

Mario wins it just on the back of Mario 3 and Mario Kart alone

Ah now none of them come close even though they are good games except the saturn 3D sonic. I played the beta, it's not the best.

Has to be Mario, more depth and better made games.
Sonic, it's all about speed and so sacrifices the aforementioned depth, ah well...

Here's to Super Smash Brother Brawl where this can be settled in a mature way, by getting the two to kick the snot out of each other!

    Got to be Mario
    Loads of classics there

    Mario Bros(nes)
    Super Mario Land(Gameboy)
    Super Mario Bros3(nes)
    Super Mario World(snes)
    Super Mario 64(N64)
And not to forget all the mario karts(snes, N64, Gamecube, DS, Wii)

Thats the standard Konami cheat isn't it?
You enter it when Gradius is getting to hairy.

I seem to remember they booby trapped it in one of the later games, causing you to explode or something, nice!

Yeah they changed it in a few of their games. First appeared in Gradius on the NES amd was actually used by testers for debugging purposes but was more famous as the 30 man code in Contra.

Used to be very handy for rocket knight adventures since it unlocked the highest one hit kill difficulty level without having to play through the game.

Mario for all of reasons listed plus his voice acting is a lot less annoying than the weasily blue fleabag. Charles Martinet ftw.

    WAAHOOO!

  • Moderators, Category Moderators, Computer Games Moderators, Society & Culture Moderators Posts: 34,679 CMod ✭✭✭✭CiDeRmAn

Yeah, Mario is the better character alright, his universe better realised, all of Sonic seem, by some rule, to be rehashes of the same enviroments from the first game.

Sonic could be brilliant, but only if they can get Miyamoto to make the game, although these days he'd be as likely to make a sprint training game out of him, using the balance board!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,657 ✭✭✭komodosp

Are we talking about the games here or the characters (or the cartoons!?)?
If the games, then while Sonic 1 & 2 definitely competed with Mario 1 & 2, after that the Mario games really got better and better while the Sonic games got... well crapper!
I hate to admit it cause I had a Megadrive and my SNES owning friend and I were always arguing over which was better, but Mario 3 is way better than Sonic 3 despite Mario 3 being on the previous generation (NES)... And Super Mario World was a work of genius while Sonic & Knuckles, while being graphically spectacular was just kind of boring and repetetive...

Good lord, the poll is nearly level. I would have thought that Mario would be out of sight. All of the Mario's still stand up to this day (except perhaps Sunshine) whilst Sonic was just a few cheap party tricks thrown together - I am currently replaying all of the Sonics on the Xbox 360 Megadrive collection and although Sonic hasn't aged as badly as I remember, its absolutely not a patch on Mario 1, 3, world, or 64.

Depends on a lot of factors. If we're talking about the games (Not taking into account any Sonic games post 16-bit), then it's apples and oranges tbh.

They're both totally different styles of game and do what they intend very well.

The only level I think you can compare them on is being a mascot.

In which case - Sonic FTW!!!

I mean come on. A blue badass hedgehog with runners or a fat old Italian plumber. It's not the hardest decision in the world.

    Mario hands down.
It helped that you got to shoot ducks too with Duck Hunt being on the same cartridge as the first Mario on the NES,when Mr Claus brought me that circa 87 or 88 I knew I had seen the future!
Wasnt too mad about No 2 but 3 really was a fantastic game with so much game play to it.And Mario kart,I dont know how many months of my life i invested(wasted) on that game and never ever got bored of it.

Balls. Sonic has turned from loveable scamp with attitude into a smarmy bellend that doesn't mind a bit of interspecies going ons.

  • Moderators, Computer Games Moderators Posts: 2,975 Mod ✭✭✭✭LoGiE

If I wasn't supposed to be impartial I'd have locked this thread already :) There's just more layers to Mario games. I've enjoyed Sonic games but I've always gone back for more Mario. I mean discovering all the secrets in Mario World have me doing air punches for christ sakes...

What annoyed me about Sonic was (before he got a voice and therefore personality) he was being described by the megadrive magazines and various ads at the time as the hedgehog "with attitude"... We're talking about one who runs around setting cuddly creatures free from robots with several interludes boucing around big pinball-esque complexes... Where's the "attitude"?

Mario threw fire at animals (many of them innocent, just walking up and down their platform minding their own business) and jumped on them to squash them, not to mention throwing them at each other, kicking their shells around and killing them with their own eggs! Now that's "attitude"!

sonic used to tap his foot and look all impatient if you left him standing around too long. that was his attitude.

It's mario for me. Super Mario Bros 3 is one of the best games of all time, It's one of the few video games that's a timeless classic.

I have the old sonic the hedgehog games on the psp and every couple of months I find myself going "Hey, I used to love this game. I'm gonna relive my childhood" and then after half an hour playing getting really bored. Games of Sonic the Hedgehog take FOREVER

If anyone remembers the storyline description from Mario one they will see that mario is actually a very dark game with huge moral decisions to make. Bowser turned all the inhabitants of mushroom kingdom into koopas, goombas and breakable stone blocks. So in order for mario to save the mushroom kingdom he's got to kill a lot of it's citizens to do it. All sonic did was save furry animals, mario had to break a few eggs to make his omlet.

Although both of them are guilty of producing crappy games which have nothing to do with them except that they are used as sprites...

    "Bass Fishing with Sonic"
    "Mario's putting challenge!"

Mario's got some quality spin-offs though. There's no denying the genius of mario kart, mario golf, mario tennis and the Mario RPGs. Sonic's spin-offs are universally crap.

Ah alcohol - making mediocre party games fun since time began.

Until the invention of the Wii.

I would imagine It is now the biggest cause of broken LCD tvs.

  • Moderators, Category Moderators, Computer Games Moderators Posts: 52,403 CMod ✭✭✭✭Retr0gamer

I think Demons Souls is the new number 1 cause. The Atlus website warned people that are prone to controller in the LCD TV not to play the extra hard boss available on halloween.

I used to love Sonic, but Mario had more, I don't know, repeat playability.

Except for Mario 2, god I hated that game. I never got to play Sonic on the Mega CD or Dreamcast, I went PS at that route. A bit disappointed now, as I would have loved to get a go with the Chaos Crew and that.

Sonic, in my opinion, lost it when they made the move to Dr Eggman instead of Robotnik.

It seems like a lot of new games can't replicate the old playability factor, witht their new fangled graphics, and "shock" tactics of touching taboo factors.

Better take this to a new thread, going way OT.
