If its the newer 2005 model, simple answer, unless you want the risk of lots of expensive things going wrong with it (thus far i have replaced clutch, dual mass fly wheel, injector loom, injector 4, handbrake, bushings etc.) dont bother even looking at it. The 1.9TDi is supposed to be underpowered and outdated, i have the 2.0TDi and in fairness it is very quick and ecconomical.

Just my 2 cents, best of luck with whatever you deside to go with

my experience of the passat has not been good. I bought a 99' 1.9tdi last year and my god the amount of problems with it.
I had 3 regulators that needed replacing thats on the windows when they decided to stop working. Bout 200 euro plus to fix each time.
I had a leaking problem at the drivers side footwell which has the ecu ( cars internal computer for electrics and so on ) which kept coming back even though a mecahnic said he fixed it.
The first problem with the regulators is not uncommon on my age passat or the model after that as well ( I have a mate who also had one )
The second problem also happens with both models its an engineering fault seemingly. VERY annoying. Not sure bout the new model they may have fixed it on that.
But put these problems along side what the first poster said and you have a lengthy repair bill that can happen.
On a positive side when they run they are great on fuel and the engine itself didnt give hassle. Mine probably would have run for another 10 years but everything else on the car would have fallen apart. Quality german engineering my hole.
ps I sold traded it in and bought a Mazda 6. Its a fantastic drive and well worth checking one out if you havent thought of this route. Looks well, handles well (way better than the tank passat) and its japanese so lets be fair wont break down.

i have had one passat 06 from new. Company car and had it for a total of 34 months, total time in garage 5 months, by the time i replaced it i hated it so much. To many problems to mention but fuel pump going while down while driving at 120k causing it to shut down engine and electrics was hairy enough, would never touch a vw ever again. Anyway i crashed it on the way to pick up my new car

**** me thats mental stuff. How do they get away with it. Thats mental for a new car to have that many problems. You were lucky it was a company car I had to pay for my repairs:mad:

It's not mental, the mental thing was that we had 16 06-07 passats and 9 of them had the same fuel pump issues and MSL did'nt bother their hoop to rectify it.
2 days after I got the car, it cut out in the middle if a junction, pain in the arse. Send it back to MSL (VW dist.) and they had it for 2.5 weeks and I had to collect it from there, was happy being in my new car again. Went to pull out of MSL, looked up left and right , engage and ....... cut out.... went back in and they tried to give me a Fox as a replacement ...... They had it again for another 2 weeks....

Out of the 16 cars in the company only one guy was happy with his. We all drive Mondeos now.

yeah cant go far wrong with a mondeo I'd say. I had a focus company car it never broke down once. Great auld yolk.
When I bought my Mazda there last month I had 3 motors on my mind. A Mazda 6, an Avensis or a Mondeo.
I looked at 2 mondeos both in need of a lot of body repair, 3rd car I saw was the Mazda and it was in great nick and I got a great deal so took it.
Wouldnt have minded a Mondeo though nice car.

We have a few passats in the family and no problems with them apart from a fuel cooler falling off. They were recalled for this a week later. 2 of them were bought in 05 just as they came out and another bought in 2008. No bother other than that. Ive heard of lots of problems with fuel pumps & dual mass fly wheels though
