Theory Test and Beyond

Ok so I just applied for the theory test (mines on Oct. 14th)

I've had a look at the CD a good few times and did the practise test but haven't got 35 yet (lowest I got was 31, highest was 34).

I don't reallu understand cars (like as far as engines and stuff goes)...

I have about 6 weeks to get ready for it. How can I prepare and stuff?! :P (Considering I have both school and a job aswell!).

    Advice?!
    :D

Keep doing questions on the Cd
    Eventually they'll start repeating themselves

I've taken the practise test 8 times tonight, 4 before and 4 after applying for the test... the 4 before I failed them all and the 4 after i passed them all except the 3rd! lol! It was the 1st time I ever passed (I got 1 wrong the 1st 2 times and 4 wrong the last!)

    :D

If you have the Ver. 4 CD, you can take practice 'sessions' under each category, which asks 20 questions from only that category (Safety, Observations, Technical etc.)
You might find this more useful than just doing the actual mock theory test, where you can get a lot of the same questions repeating and you don't make that much progress in covering a large amount of the questions that may appear.

I'ld say just read through all the questions in the 'question book' for the car section first.
There are about 900 questions but it won't take you more than a couple of days to get through them all.

First time i did the practice test I failed it too. But then keep doing the test and you'll find the questions repeat themselves. Once you've read through the 'question book' and know the answers to all the questions that will be asked, you'll fly through the tests.

I read through all the relevant questions from the question book the day before my test and then got all 40 answers right in the test.

Its not too hard. Just keep doing the practice test and read through all the questions in the question book to know the answers to the questions that can be asked.

Also guess knowing the basics about how cars work and all will help you miles too so here are a couple of links you should check out in your free time:

Congratulations! I haven`t even applied for it yet and it`s already frightening me thinking about it!
Hope you don`t mind me asking a question here but.. can you sit the theory test as many times as you want or are there limitations on it???

You shouldn't be nervous. The test isn't that bad at all. And as far as I know you can sit it as many times as you want. If you get the CD, you can practice all the questions. Most of them are common sense, but then you'll get weird ones about driving tractors (I don't think these actually come up in the exams), and obscure ones (like when you're going over a hill you've to be on the look out in case they're trimming hedges  ).

    But you'll do fine. :)

Thanks for that! They`ll never get me on the ol` lookin` out for hedge-cutters...been on a bicycle all this time past...completely paranoid about thorns!!!! Thanks for taking the time to help out. All I really have to do is find a way of remembering the stopping-distances.....I`m fine with words...but numbers just fly out of my head after I read them! Thanks again.Jack.

Got myself the cd-rom last saturday..definitely better than reading the book. I`ve only failed one of the mock tests out of 18 so far...should I just apply now and be done with it? I get the feeling I`m nervous for no good reason.

I booked mine before I started studying. ABout 2 weeks in advance. I practiced on the cd for a few days before the exam. I had a kinda 70%/30% pass to fail ratio on it and I passed the test. I found the actual test alot easier than the cd-rom practice tests. In fact my highest score was in the actual test! Go for it mate!

I never passed a practise test until I booked the test! And then I passed them all barr 1 or 2! lol!

    It is still 40 questions!

Tractor questions DO come up! (I had 1 or 2 in mine). It's because they have the one test for the car and tractor!

Don't worry! I did and it was pointless!

    Good Luck!!
    :D

Thanks for the inspiration! I`ll book it as quick as they`ll let me, then I can start worrying about the really hard stuff!!!! All I have to remember about the theory test at this stage is to take my time.. I was a getting a bit cocky on the practice tests and trying to fly threw them, ended up getting simple ones wrong, I was flyin` past horses and pedestrians an` everything!!!! Think I might even have gone through a built-up area in fog with my full lights on!!!
Anyway, thanks for the replies etc, appreciate it.

Same! I think the longest I spemnt doing a practise test was 8 minutes! Usually about 5 though!... I spent 20 minutes doing the actual one! lol!
