3 Mobile Broadband

    Hi

I have the 3 mobile broadband. Pretty happy with it, but inconsistent on my MacBook. (Intel Mac, 10.4.9). On the network connection icon on the 3 startup box, my Mac has 1 Bar showing, but never shows connection to the "3" network. Same broadband is installed on my wifes Toshiba Windows XP laptop. She is showing 4 bars on the connection Icon and is showing connectivity to the "3" network.

Has my little white MacBook got a crappy network card or something?
    (I'm a non-techy!!)!

The Wi-Fi hardware (card) on the Macbook is fine, but I do remember that my wife's one didn't play well with some Wi-Fi access points in the early days (especially Apple Airport ones!), but that software updates fixed things up.

Not sure if there are any Wi-Fi network-specific updates in it, but it would be worth updating from 10.4.9 to 10.4.11 just in case. Use the "Software Update..." function under the Apple menu.

I'm not a 3 user, so I can't comment on why else you might not be able to connect, but updating the Macbook should be the first step, before you look any further.

For me, I couldn't even run the software although I'm running 10.4.11.

    Weird.

The network card in the MacBook has nothing to do with it. The USB stick 3 gives you is a 3G modem and it does all the broadcasting/receiving - it would work on a Mac/PC with absolutely no WiFi/network card installed so as I said, that definitely is not the problem. So updating the WiFi software, etc will have no impact...

I have 3's E169 modem on pay-as-you-go and the supplied software never worked correctly for me. I had to set up everything manually and when I'm near decent coverage, it works very well. I can check my settings when I get home, though I am on Leopard rather than Tiger, so not everything may apply...

Ah, I thought perhaps the OP was using a Wi-Fi AP with a 3 SIM in it.

In the case of a USB modem, I'd update anyway (to get any improvements possible, although they may not relate to your issue), but I'd also check if the software that they supplied is the latest version and whether it is possible/necessary to update the firmware of the modem.
