Cork City Fire Brigade

I'm wondering if anyone here knows anything about the way Cork City Fire Brigade rolls out to call outs? The reason I ask is because for a good few years now I've noticed that they travel in fairly extensive convoys through the city and when in transit they use a fair few siren types. Is this just down to the different types of tenders or is it actually a tactic to create this "wall of sound" that goes through town on a regular basis? Even the new tenders often have the new yelp and old two-tones running concurrently?

The turn out depends on the call that they have recieved and how serious the call is. For all call types there is what is called a PDA (Pre-Determined Attendamce). For example a RTC it maybe 2 pumps, ET & ICU for and AFA to CUH or UCC it maybe 2 pumps, ALP & ICU.They need a chemical incident unit for UCC they may not it depends on the incident and how serious it is.
The sirens can be changed from within the cab of the appliance and from what I know they change it as they go to open up the traffic.

The idea behind the different siren tones is quite simple really. Motorists get used to hearing the one tone, so changing the tone gets motorists attention. Also when travelling in convoy etc, the different tones alert motorists that more than one emergency vehicle is behind them. That's the theory behind it anyway sometimes it doesn't always work but that's for another thread ;)
