Shimano 10 speed compatability

This may be a silly question, but is there a difference between a shiman 9 speed hub and a shimano 10 speed hub.

I'm running a 10 speed at the moment, but switched over to some of my other wheels recently (previously only used with 9 speed cassette). I switched the 10 speed cassette and it fit fine. Probem is, since I switched over my gear changing has been very jumpy and skipping.

I switched back to the original wheel and it's fine again - anyone any ideas:confused:

10s cassettes come with a spacer. This spacer is for use on 9s hubs (goes spoke side). On a 10s specific hub this spacer is not needed, and if the 10s wheel came with a bike, then the spacer didn't. Ask your bike shop nicely and they may give you a spare.

Makes sense - thanks for the answer. I'll see if I can get one - cheers.

i have a 9 yr old set of mavic cosmic elites that are 8/9 speed compatible.

so would i be right in saying that i can put new 10 speed cassete on it ?

this is because i will be building a new road bike and might buy the new ultegra groupset for it .
the wheels would not have any more that 1500 km on them are they are good as new.

would i be right in saying 8/9/10 have axle width of 130 mm.

yes, the 10spd Shimano cassette will fit the Mavic's - it uses a narrower chain and hence the sprockets are spaced closer together, so the 10 / 9 spd cassettes are almost same width.

would that mean i also need a new chainset, or at least new chainrings to suit 10 speed drivetrain ?

i think the orginal may have been for 7 or 8 speed ?

Upon further investigation, it seems the hub was in fact a 9 speed after all - there was actually a spacer behind the cassette hidden by grease and dirt.
I probably would never have found it if I wasn't looking for it. Thanks again for the responses.
