I've always thought of Butler as an action star but his continued ability to choose the worst rom-coms imaginable seriously hinders my acceptance of him. Compare Butler to the no nonsense Statham and you can see the difference, Statham recognises his talent for action whereas Butler seems to want to be an A lister.

Fair point, I think Jason Statham films have there time and place and I do love nothing more then sitting down and watch the likes of crank 2(Which is bat**** crazy by BTW) but I would personally never go see one in the cinema and part with me cash time. But look at say Gamer I'll def be going to see that opening night.

He should really cave on the romcoms, If he wants to be taken "seriously" I mean try a drama or thriller.

I really hope you're just good at being sarcastic. It looks like the tripe it's going to be Like Death Race or that other mad max like clone that I can't think of right now that didn't do well either. Hmyes.

My point is it's going to bomb. Like a motherf*ck.

This honestly looks like one of the worst movies ever made, I saw the trailer in the cinema a few weeks and the whole audience was groaning and laughing at it, just another Hollywood attempt to cash in on video games thats probably going to fail miserabley

i'm actually serious. I'm a real fan of braindead films given the right mood every film you watch can't be schindlers list! Still eacn to their own.

Could be great craic, but it does have that Leguizamo chap in it. Anything he touches turns to shoite.

I'm optimistic about it. Its a Neveldine and Taylor movie, so if it has even half the energy of the 2 Crank movies, it could be alot of fun.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 23,140 ✭✭✭✭TheDoc

I'll give it a watch one way or another then decide then.

Sounds like a modernised running man, that might turn into one of those fails in the cinema, but DVD winners.

Oh I love braindead movies, as long as they know they're braindead, thats why Crank worked so well, its utterly ludicrous but it knows it is and has a ball with coming up with more insane scenes, this just looks like its taking itself too seriously though, will prob catch it on dvd but I wouldnt go to the cinema to see it

+1. Also does anyone know of a movie with an American rap artist that actually did quite well in the box office? Can't think of any off the top of me noggin.

At a stretch (and it's a real stretch), anything with Will Smith in it?

Might not quite meet the rap star requirements.

Oh and XXX 2 or whatever it was called.

8 Mile was successful enough too, I think.

Boz N The Hood had Ice Cube in it.

Are We There Yet did well.

GAMER - THE REALITY....14 y/o uses his dad's credit card to pay to play this, and fake his age. Runs into combat and starts killing his own team mates, then lulz, and gets shot.

    Anaconda did quite well.

Gamer looks like a weird cross of the Running Man and The Condemned

Mos Def -a quick lookup on IMDB shows him in HitchHikers Guide, 16 Blocks, The Italian Job, Be Kind Rewind

Even if we look up Ludacris we can see he was in Crash and one of the fast and furious flicks

LL Cool J - Any Given Sunday, SWAT, Deep Blue Sea
then there's Method Man, T.I, Andre 3000 etc etc etc

    Hey there,

Was looking forward to heading out to see Gamer tonight but cant find a listing for it anywhere. Release date is shown as the 4th for the UK and Im almost sure I've seen ads.
Anyone hear anything about the release over here...?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 254 ✭✭sergiotheonly

    I'll reply to myself :)

Just in case anyone else was wondering - seems the film has slipped to September 18th over here. Not sure why but at least its coming.

Yipes indeed... it does look like it has the potential to be a little bit too strange for its own good. Dammit - I was hoping for a good no brainer, not a brainless movie.

Saw the trailer for this recently ... I'm in two minds, the action scenes look like it could be a good bit of fun. But I have the feeling that if I see this film, I'm basically going to be lectured at, in the same way as The Condemned.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 19,976 ✭✭✭✭humanji

I mentioned this film ages ago when I made a list of upcoming movies. It's funny to see that the year since I mentioned it, it's gone from:
Detectives Remy Munro and Margo Davis are hurled into the addictive and money making world of video games, where they attempt to track down a serial killer who re-enacts the methods of killing from popular video games.

    to:
Kable is the superstar and cult hero of the ultraviolent "Slayers." Kable is controlled by Simon, a young gamer with rock star status who continues to defy all odds by guiding Kable to victory each week. Taken from his family, imprisoned and forced to fight against his will, the modern day gladiator must survive long enough to escape the game to free his family, regain his identity and to save mankind from Castle's ruthless technology.

edit: actually, I got a phone call from a friend who read this and reliably informs me that the first synopsis is from a film called Gamers, which was called Gamer but had to change it because the second film beat them too it. I'm kind of happy about that as the first one sounds too stupid to miss.

    forget Metacritic...

i defo want to see this myself.

the trailers look great ... and i like weird films !!

just a shame the release date is the 18th September :(

    21% on RT.

I actually thought it might be good from the trailer. And I'm not into action movies in general.

Disappointing it got such a low rating.

I reckon the Gamer film will be nothing more than an extended version of the trailer.

You're obviously not a fan of over the top action films then. It's this years Shoot-Em-Up, a joyously over the top spectacle which disregards plot and character building in place of impressive action scenes. Perfect fodder for a lazy Friday night.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 254 ✭✭sergiotheonly

Looks like a pure guilty pleasure but I am starting to get the feeling that Gamer might be a little to scattershot to be truly enjoyable.

Either way, I'll still be in the cinema for both!

Just got the weekly UCI film schedule and Gamer was described as follows:

    Gamer 18.gif
95 mins, Unremittingly brutal, gory physical and weapons action violence..

And there's always Ninja Assassin which could go either way but from the trailer looks just a little bit insane.

I liked V for Vendetta a lot but with the brothers involved...
What a great Autumn for cinematic cheese!

  • Legal Moderators, Society & Culture Moderators Posts: 5,400 Mod ✭✭✭✭Maximilian

I'd kinda dismissed that as rubbish. didn't realise the Watchoutskiiers brothers or whoever were involved though. Director was AD on their other movies.

Could rock. Unless it has an equivalent of this in it.

    O wait. Wrong clip.

No not that one either. brb.

I saw this a few nights ago, I'm not familiar with anything the director & co. have been involved with before but this is one of those films that's so bad it's good. i enjoyed watching it only because the plot was so out there and it had moments of 80's action nostalgia thrown in.

Also Michael C Hall was so OTT it was hilarious!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 20,558 ✭✭✭✭dreamers75

    Isnt a bad movie

reckon most on here will enjoy it tbh.

Action movie, lots of deaths, a reasonable story and decent camera angle usage

Was expecting tripe albeit hoping for action moive stupidness and got a across between both.

Dude out of dexter is very good in this, shocked Verhovens name isnt attached to it, its very similiar to his visions from robocop.

    Inspired by previous vidya-based movies = Things I expect to see in this movie;

    1) Endless, non-sensical mashing of random controller inputs.
    2) Consoles being played with no connectors in the back.
    3) Halo being played on a PS3.
    4) The Power-Glove... it's so bad.

Saw this yesterday and can honestlly say it was one of the worst films I've ever seen! I enjoy action films as much as the next person but this is taking the Michael. The story is so ridiculous I found myself laughing out loud many times at what was supposed to be a non laugh out loud film. The absolute cheek of the makers to think they can just appeal to the lowest animal instinct with this rubbish (I know I should've expected as much when I went in), at one point, GB's walking down a road and it just cuts to two people having sex, I was a bit taken aback wondering "okay, who are these, must be relevant to the story somehow" but no, it just cuts back to GB walking and says nothing! I can imagine the editor putting the scene together and just saying to himself "you know what would make this film better? Random sex!"
And the technical explanation is very half arsed. When I go to a sci fi film, I expect a reasonable explanation of anything technical a la Next Generation, but this is ridiculous! The premise (not ruining anything) is that you can pay to be a simulant or pay to control a simulant, but when he explains the science about it, it takes around 5 seconds which is pretty much "eh yeah, you just put a modem in his head", pathetic! Don't get me started on the fat b*stards having sex through simulants!!!
And poor old GB, he looks so old in this trying to keep up with the technical side of things, at one point he says something like "turn of the Nurex", which sounds like my dad when he asks me to download something onto a page (print something). His strong Scottish/Spartan accent is still there even though it does mention that he was born and bred in NY. That's just one plot hole out of many that I'll mention.
Trust me, do not go and see this film, I walked out with my head down, embarrassed to be coming out of this tripe, even for no brainers, it's brainless!

I've seen it because of Michael C. Hall. Basically he's the only one good point of this picture. If you saw Dead Race you may like some elements of The Gamer, but still difference between this two movies is pretty big. Well, I prefer to play COD...

The Running Man is a masterpiece compared to the drivel that is Gamer.
    Dreadful rubbish.
While I was watching it ,I kept on saying to myself, man this film is so bad .
No plot, rubbish dialogue, bad acting ,bad camera work, poorly edited and shot action scenes ,just dreadful overall.
I could have written the script on the back of a matchbox.
I really enjoyed Shoot em Up and Death Race but Gamer was just abominable.
